I’ll admit that I was excited to hear that S&W was coming out with a .22lr M&P but after finding out that they are watering it down Im not really that excited anymore.
I’m an IPSC shooter in Massachusetts and compete with a full-size M&P 9mm. I’ve been drooling at the prospect of getting this .22 version for low-cost training. Unfortunately, I’ve just been notified via e-mail by S&W that the gun will not be Mass. Compliant upon initial distribution. Dang! Looks like I’m doomed to keep ponying up for CCI-Blazer 9mm (aluminum case) for “low cost” practice.
Pretty disappointed after seeing THIS video
No removable backstraps. No model without a thumb safety.
The backstraps are a very desirable feature of the M&P. Changing the grip size to fit the shooter’s hand better is a huge plus for me. That being negated on the .22 model is a big red flag for me.
That thumb safety may not be removable like the ones on regular M&P’s. If that’s the case, all my Kydex holsters aren’t gonna work for the .22 model.
I would have like to have seen the adjustable backstraps. Is there any physical reason that a .22 can’t be striker fired? Or is it just more economical for them to produce it with a hammer? Perhaps they are made from the same manufacturing tooling as the P22.
The video says that consumer demand drives the thumb safety vs not having one. I find it hard to believe that they sell more thumb safety models than non in the standard duty calibers. Why would they only sell it with the safety?
So what would happen if you just cut the thumb paddles off the safety so they just weren’t there anymore?
Threaded barrel is a no go for California even if they made a conversion kit.
Besides as mentioned,
No backstrap.
No sight change out.
No thumb safety removal.
No striker fired. Wonder what that does to trigger pull and could even Apex parts be used. If I can’t get a similar trigger to me what is the point. Maybe the lower is even different.
I was so looking forward to this.
At this point I would rather get the JLT laser trainer for the M&P when it comes out some time in April.
Perhaps, put I think the target market is different on this on from other rimfire pistols… I think it’s mostly us that will be buying to have a trainer for ourselves, wifes and kids. Not the guy that shooting bullseye matches with them.
Would the S&W A22 with the 4.1" barrel be an adequate stand-in for the full-size M&P 9mm (4.25" barrel) for low-cost training? Weights are not that different, and ergonomics appear somewhat similar. My competition M&P 9 has a trigger lightened to 4 lbs., so I also wonder if that would be similar to the trigger pull on the A22.
