Man, I wish you would.
Right now it’s pretty much @1168 and myself trying to mind the store - he usually gets to the few things that come up before I do.
I’m getting worried, this isn’t the first one I’ve rode into the dirt and unless we can come up with something QUICK to drive some activity it’s not gonna be long before we join Gunhub as Tumbleweed City. I dunno about y’all, but I don’t see any way I can make “one of the last mods that had to help sunset a once-prominent community” look good on my resume… and just joining ARFCOM isn’t an option because they refuse to take registrations from non-ISP emails.
Maybe it’s time for me to start spending more time at 1911Forum and Pistolsmith again…
I really hate being negative about things, but after most of a year…. This was not done well. And it is disappointing.
I am not a member at TOS but I do peruse certain threads since I do find good information there along with news topics you can’t find anywhere else. But normally it’s just the first couple of pages that are worth reading since every thread devolves into purse swinging and name calling.
With advertising gone, owners can’t be recouping any investment in this place. End game certainly isn’t growth.
I know little/nothing about running a website, but I don’t think I ever read the reason that the old format and look of the previous version could not be carried over. I understand there are certain technical things that are no longer used, but personally I cannot stand to look at this site.
This thread has seen more activity than most anything else lately. Perhaps more Discourse Sucks threads would liven the place up a bit.
Seriously though, the window of opportunity to “enhance the overall experience” and focus on a “user-friendly interface” was last Summer. I think it’s fair to say that whomever is responsible for this forum is satisfied as is… a quiet library of information to search, not contribute.
Which is about what Gunhub is other than a sponsor’s private ads section.
We inherited BattleRifles and a few other really valuable forums over there 20-odd years ago… but as oldtimers died or moved on and one owner after another lost interest, nothing new could replace what was lost.
Take a look over there, guys; that’s where I see us sooner rather than later. What, not even discussion of Harmeet Dhillon turrningg DOJ Civil Rights Division into a Federally-backed version of FPC or SAF?
Funny how things work. The https://smith-wessonforum.com/ forum just underwent a major format change. Much nicer than the previous (imo) and easy to maneuver through. For whatever reason, unless a paid member, the old site was beyond obnoxious with ads thrown at you. No more.
Formatting. I keep having to adjust the zoom on my browser back and forth to make buttons work. The speech window is often larger than my screen. The cursor often disappears behind the pop-up keyboard on my phone. The cursor is often blinking inches away from where the typing actually shows up, which makes editing a nightmare. Sometimes quoting works properly; sometimes it does not.
EE Feedback. In the EE (sales/classified) forums, there used to be a mechanism to show trustworthiness. Check ar15.com and r/gunaccessoriesforsale for examples. It can be as simple as a messaging system where the feedback messages from previous transactions show up when you click on a user name.
Update, that big blank space is a series of spots for Served By Adbutler ad links. No ads are attached to them to reformat them to acceptable size so they just go with Adbutler’s default “big square”.
There’s no telling how many guys can’t login here and just said screw it. I was trying to help a guy get his account opened up again, but he never gets the validation email to get started.
I’m sure a bunch of guys gave up. That’s a shame.
Sounds just like how Gunhub died. ![]()
JC, do you hear the chimes?
I’ve been in contact with a few folks that used to be regulars. When the changeover made it tough to get logged in they just decided to focus more on their family and real life connections. Some have bagged “social media” all together.
I miss their contributions, especially Chuckman, but I can’t fault their choices.
I assumed Chuckman’s absence was heath related. I also miss his contributions. I very much enjoyed reading Firefly’s postings in GD. IIRC, he was run off by blowhards criticizing his choices in life. I’ve been pleased to not see postings from Straight_Shooter. I very much enjoyed reading SteyrAug contributions. I believe he abandoned M4C due to struggling with Discourse. The Internet is a big place… lots of places to wander off.
I miss Firefly as well. Dude was hilarious. Hell, the list is very, very long.
Yeah, my gal thought Fly was a laugh and a half.
Firefly was hella entertaining. I think it was one of the LE threads that drove him away.
