Savage Scout question

I like the idea but am interested in one chambered in 7mm-08 or 260 Rem. An internet source suggested that Savage could make one on a custom basis. The web site makes no mention of a custom shop. Any info on this?

I may go .308 anyhow. What optic, other than the EER scout scope, should I look at? Aimpoint?

Thanks.

I am not an savage expert I thought savage had a production scout rifle.

If you want a custom scout http://www.grizzlycustom.com/packages/scout/

Savage does indeed make a factory Scout. It’s the 10FCM.

The Scout Reference page has contact info for people at Savage to talk to about a custom Scout.

After reading a very interesting Lightfighter thread on Scouts, I have my eye on a Burris 2-7x32 Ballistic Plex pistol scope. Supposedly eye relief isn’t a problem, ballistic plex makes hold-overs easy, and plenty of zoom to see stuff far away. I wasn’t ever really happy with the 2.75x of the Burris Scout scope. I always felt like I wasn’t making good use of the extra reach of the rifle since I couldn’t really see too far away. A fixed 4x would have been more useful for my lousy eyes.

I had an Aimpoint Micro sitting on my Scout for a while but that was just for funsies. Until I get that 2-7x, I’m sticking with irons. Though I wouldn’t mind if my front sight lost that ridiculous ball that sits on top.

Thanks, subzero. The Savage web site lists the .308 Scout, but no mention of a custom shop.

CAll Savage and ask to talk to the Custom Shop. They do have one, and they will make a custom gun for ya.

for the OP

Please keep us updated on how this progresses. For a scout I think I am okay with the basic .308 config since the short range optic might not allow for anything like real precision at longer ranges. And if you don’t shoot farther than average, I wonder if 7-08 or .260 makes sense. (this is just me thinking out loud- not trying to call you out or anything…) OTOH, good .308 isn’t any easier to come by than any number of other rounds these days…

Anywho- a local shop got one in recently and I was very intrigued.

I’ll call them this week. My interest in 7mm-08 et al is reduced recoil - I’ve been afflicted with tennis elbow, sore knees - old age is creeping up on me all of a sudden!

I have one in .308 from before they quit making them…and then started again. No accu trigger, but adjusted to acceptable status anyway. I mounted a Leupold 2.5x EER scope. Had it duracoated. Makes for one handy little deer rifle, great to carry all day long, and shoot a little…or once.

Its a push feed, and occasionally the extractor doesn’t pick up the live round in the chamber when unloading, but has never happened when the round is fired.

Accuracy is more than acceptable. I don’t shoot too many groups with it, but last I checked, about 1.5 moa with my reloads. Sighted at about 1-2 inches high at 100, I have no question that I could hit any big game animal in the right spot within any reasonable range I’d encounter in my AO.

I like it for what it is. Was very reasonably priced when I got it, too.

Note they are marked discontinued. No Scouts appear in the 2009 Ruger catalog - at least in the print version I have.

Steyr makes a scout in .308 and 7mm-08 $1264 on buds gun shop
this sight got pretty good info on steyr scouts http://www.steyrscout.org/project.htm let us know what you decide.

As previously noted, the Scout is a current Savage production gun in the Savage LE line. As one of their LE guns, it’s supposed to be guaranteed for 1MOA or better (as opposed to 1.5 on their sporting centerfires).

Contact Effie Sullivan about a custom order. She arranged for a custom left-handed Precision Carbine for me a few months ago. You may wait a week or two before you hear back from her, but if email fails you can always call the factory. She’s one busy lady, but very nice to work with once you make contact. esullivan@savagearms.com

Any idea just how “custom” they can get? Like, can they make one in 6.8SPC? That takes AR mags?

Best laugh I’ve had all day, Rob, thanks.

No, I don’t get the sense that they’re quite that flexible. They might be willing to put in a different caliber barrel, assuming it was suitable for the short action.

I just make it a habit to ask - the worst that can happen is that I get told, “No.” But then again, I’m now the proud new owner of a left-hand bolt FC10 Precision Carbine, with both AccuTrigger and Accustock. And that’s not in the production catalogue.

One of these days, I’ll have to get home, get some glass on it and break it in.

Try

http://www.ruger-firearms.com/Firearms/FAProdResults?function=famid&famid=60&variation=M77®%20Hawkeye®%20Compact&bct=Yes&type=Rifle

for a 16.5" barreled Ruger. I just read an article by Dick Metcalf demonstrating how the shorter barrels are virtually as accurate as the longer barrels in today’s rifles. Very interesting for anyone like myself where finding a range beyond 300m is a two or three hour drive.

I want one in 5.45x39

What’s the major difference between the scout and the carbine at http://www.savagearms.com/10pc.htm besides the detachable box magazine? They both have the new accustock, but the Scout is lighter and less expensive.

The Scout has a more traditional barrel configuration, which includes iron sights. The Precision Carbine has a mid-weight barrel (what Savage calls their Predator Taper) that is slightly heavier. The Scout barrel is a half inch shorter.

Both have the detachable box magazines, Accu-Triggers and the new Acc-Stock, as well as oversize bolt handles.

The Scout is obviously set up for the forward scope placement that is typical of the genre, whereas the Precision Carbine is designed for a more traditional, rearward mounting.

As Savage LE guns, they’re both guaranteed to shoot 1MOA or better.

And in my opinion, they are both good value for the money.

I dont know if they will build one 7mm 08, but here is my daughters 308 precision carbine she is 90 some pounds can shoot this from any position without discomfort, and it will shoot sub .5 inch at 100yds with handloads and still has a average of 2610fps with 168SMK. These new savage rifles shoot very well.

Pappy, that’s a nice one, I’m sure your daughter is a fine marksman to be shooting half inch groups with it! Her experience is completely consistent with the last Savage bolt gun I owned, a .25/06.

What scope, base and rings do you have on it? I’ve almost decided that to get the most versatility out of my PC that I’ll want something like a 1x4 for most use as a practical rifle, but a variable with higher magnification for more precise, longer range shooting (more like what you seem to have mounted).

The rifle wasn’t inexpensive but I can see the cost of the glass exceeding the cost of the rifle pretty quickly.
