Well, here is a kid who killed his sister and mother with a .22, and from the sounds of things they were not quick kills…although I’m sure we’re not talking about fantastic shot placement in this scenario.
“I just thought it would be quick, you know? I didn’t want them to feel any pain,” he said. “That’s why I used a gun, but it was like everything went wrong.” “My sister, she came down the stairs and she was screaming and I was telling her that I’m sorry but to just hold still–that, you know, I was just going to make it go away,” he said. “But she just kept on freaking out, but finaly she she fell down, and I got her in the head about, probably, three times.”
I’ve seen news articles of people being killed with an air rifle also.
About a month ago I came home and found my wife leaving the house with the 22 rifle so I followed her behind the barn and found out the dog treed a racoon and its babies. With 22 lr Remmington subsonic it took the wife 2 head shots to get the racoon off the tree and leave its babies to run off and die. Usually 1 stinger would do the job. The shovel took care of the babies.

And I believe the poster Oddjob works in the medical profession dealing with trauma & gunshot wounds.
Seriously, this type of .22 for defensive use advocasy belongs on forums where the members spend endless pages debating whether it is a good idea to carry a pistol with a round in the chamber.
So if you need a gun to kill a woman and child who are not attacking you or fighting, a .22 should be fine.
Actually, no…I think that story showed that it sometimes isn’t even adequate for that!
Stupid question, but why kill the racoon? In my AO they’re a nuisance, but not worth worrying about.

I killed a deer,doe when I was 12-13. Shot that sucker 15+ to finish it off. My dad beat the brakes off me. Snapped my 22 in half. Lesson learned.

Because the guy is an idiot and probably born and raised in redding ca. I have the extreme misfortune of ending up in this town. I live in the outskirts they are not a problem. Unless your like a lot of the inbred population. You don’t kill a racoon because the dog chased up a tree. Especially with babies. You remove the dog and let it leave. To kill the babies with a shovel speaks volume on the lack of character.
Racoons are rarely seen in redding unless you leave your trash accessible or you have trash all over your yard. Living here i can picture the scene and let me tell you it is not pretty. Redding has more pieces of shit low lifes per capita then most cities in the united states.
if I could get a 22 in where I could not get a 9mm in then I would of course take a 22, but in the US those places are rare.
frankly I’d druther have one of those little NAA 5 shot revolvers in 22 mag that way I could at least penetrate to 12+ inches. A 12" icepick is better than just a 0" fist

Why do you think that coons are so special? They are troublesome little critters, that should be shot on sight.

As far as how you kill a raccoon, I have had to kill raccoons - lots of them. There is no “lack of character” shown by killing a raccoon with a shovel, or any other tool. The only lack of character I’ve seen here is yours, since you are obviously a city slicker with no practical knowledge of nature.

Hearing you talk that way about Redding, while I live in shreveport, la, is like an orphan hearing a rich kid whine that he didn’t get the color of ferrari that be asked for for Christmas, lol.
They are also very destructive to gardens, kill pets, etc.
Your correlation makes no sense. I have have family in breauxbridge la and many other parts. Trust me you have it better where you live. The only place i would not want to live down there is one of the wards like 3rd ward. Other than that i would trade you in a heartbeat.

You definitely have the firearms advantage there is no arguing that. There also is no arguing the crime rate. The education one i would there is a lot of idiots here. I can not speek to your area i have not looked on the map to see the locale compared to where i have been. I would rank redding as the worst place i have had to call home, and would put it up there with some of the worst places to live in the country. Like i said if i had to live in the 3rd ward i would pass.
While Im positive where you live has its problems. I would gladly trade you places. If it actually happened i may have lived to regret it, but i love my experience (albeit minimal) in la. My mothers side of the family are all from la.
Another thing you have is the food. The only time i can get some good cajun food is when my mom or grandma cooks.
I do get what you are saying, but sometimes i think we may all take where we live for granted. I still stand by what i said. I would trade you places in a heartbeat. While that is a decision i may come to regret. I would love the opportunity. If i could get your gun laws in ca i could just move someplace else in ca.
Edit: i just looked at the numbers and your crime levels are coming down and ours are rising. We have about 100,000 less people so Im thinking if our populations were a little closer so would be the crime rates. I don’t know what your moth problem is like out there, but in shasta and tehama county has the largest amount of meth labs per capita in the state. If that one situation could be remedied it would.immediately make this place a lot better. Thanks for that link i have never seen that site. I also thought shreeveport was smaller. If you ever want to check out redding you have an open invitation and local tour guide at your disposal. Plenty of fishing, hunting, and all kids of outdoor activities. That and mt…shasta being so close is the only reason i have not gone crazy.
