I would not be gambling. I would be eating all the good food i could get. It not gambling when i do it. Its losing lots of money.
We have only one or two resturants worth leaving even my shabby apartment for, and none, if you truly can appreciate good food. I wouldn’t eat anywhere in north Louisiana “for the experience/food”.

Raccons tear up everything. Last week I was in the garden and out of the corner of my eyes was a snake coiled up ,it was a rattlesnake I haven’t seen one in 3 years so I caught it and showed it to the wife who said I was stupid for playing with a snake. Yep I killed it, can’t have rattle snakes around to bite the cows or horses or kids. Then I also have a dislike for coyotes, they kill the pets and chickens. rip the after birth from the cows giving birth as well as kill the calves. That is a big $$$$ loss. Ground squirrels and gophers are on the list as well as they eat the profits, dig holes in the fields where the live stock can break their legs. To top it off I also kill mosquitos . I am a low life scum . No doubt about it.
You can eat the raccons as well.
When I was a kid I got a new pellet gun and killed one of the chickens and all I will say is I never shot a chicken again! Then I lent the pellet gun to a friend and he shot out his dads windshield to see if the pellet gun was powerful enough. He never shot a windshield again either. The pellet gun was evil.

.22lr can make minimum penetration requirements, but as mentioned, leaves a very small wound channel. I would still consider it marginally adequate for defense for the very recoil sensitive (think severe arthritis) if it weren’t for the fact that .22lr firearms just aren’t very reliable. Sure, they’re reliable enough for hunting and I know YOUR grandpappy’s .22lr has never failed you, but every .22lr that I’ve owned has experienced a stoppage at some point.

My problem was not with the killing ofnthe animals not even the babies as i explained to nineteenkilo through a pm as he requested. It was using the wrong tool for the job. The animal was up a tree. There was time to utilize something better than a 22.
If he was out digging a hole, and all he had is a shovel to kill the animal. Then that would be the right tool as it was the only available.
There are only a few things i will kill that i won’t eat. Ground squirrels, and coyote. I do not believe i would eat Racoon either. I would try it not sure i would like it.
I should have explained more in my response. I apologize Steve s, and take everything i said back. I grouped you in with the low life i have had experience with in this city, and that was wrong.
It was also a lot more humane to kill the babies than to let them run off and die a slow death.

I tend to agree about the racoons. Shooting one with a 22lr to dispatch it is one thing but why the need to beat the babies to death with a shovel? In reality you could just let the coons go on their own merry way (which they almost always do) or at the very least give the little fuzzballs a quick, humane death. I agree that it speaks volumes about your character that you show no compassion in beating defenseless baby animals to death with a shovel. Isn’t this one of the reasons we own firearms but yet you opt for a shovel?
And, guess what? I am not a city slicker - I live in Maine for fuck’s sake. I’m not a prude by any means, but I am a firm believer in respecting the animals you do kill, and not doing so just for the thrill of killing something.

The shovel is a quick kill. The babies would die on their own starvation would be a long slow death or get eaten alive by birds of prey in the area or coyotes. Why would bonking them with a shovel be meaner than shooting them or letting them starve to death or get eaten alive? I guess everybody has their opinion on the best way of killing something. I don’t enjoying killing anything but I have to harden my heart and do it. Is the beef or food animals being killed commercially any nicer or quicker? Think about it.

I can’t fathom a reason to carry a .22 defensively, sure a hit to a vital area might kill someone, eventually, but it’s definitely WAY under gunned for any sort of “social situation”. After taking animals with various calibers, I can’t feel good about anything sub 9mm JHP.
I investigated two homicides in which a .22 rifle was used as the murder weapon, but it would not be my first or even second choice as a defensive cartridge.
