I'll take mine black...

Looks like the Janitor has some cool stuff in his workshop. Now I wonder what else those janitors guys do down there…

While in Fallujah we were training the iraqi army. I was training a squad of iraqis how to patrol and how to be observant while doing so. I sent my buddy up ahead of our patrol route to set an ambush for us to see if any of the iraqis could find him. he chose a birm and layed on the opposite side of it in a spot the had a little dip in the ridge of the birm just big enough for his head and shoulders to fill in so that it appeared that the birm was continuous. he blended in perfectly and i could not see him at all except for the black dot that his rifle formed on the birm. This made me realize that painted rifles are not just “cool” but functional, and can make the differance between a successful or a blown ambush. While this scernario may never happen to any of us I think it is important to be prepared for.

While I like the Camo Paint jobs, I can’t bring myself to paint my Carbines. I do however have a kit prepared, stored in a box In case I ever need to paint them.

its probably really unnecessary to have more than one rifle much less 4-5 or I couldn’t imagine how many some of yall have.

I’d paint one if I had any talent at it and didn’t screw it up in the process.

a big plus one! never really wanted to paint any of my firearms until I saw that.

reminds me of dragon scales…

Very nice antelopes. That’s a tough beast to bring home.

Not sure what you ment but around here (SW Wyoming) you could walk around and hit antelope with rocks.

As for painting, I want to try it on my next rifle but like many here I am afraid I will mess it up and my rifle will look terrible.

I like the look of black rifles, I like the look of rifles with different color furniture/accessories, and I like the look of camo painted–they all offer something a little different. I think it boils down to intended usage or in many cases just what you find appealing. The Janitors paint job is sick and the painted ar thread has all kinds of great examples. I thought the one below really illustrated vdegani1’s point. Not my rifles, not my picture; I just swiped it from the painted thread.

Can also be said why do you need a Colt or a LMT if all your doing is punching paper. People get what they want and like. I don’t think I have ever really needed anything I have, but when it’s your money get what you want and the best you can “afford”.

Couldn’t agree with you more.

Before I would have agreed with ARs must be black until I let my buddy try this on my M4. The paint is a special order “Light Tan Flat” 2400 series from Gunkote.
The color seems close to the Knight’s SR-15 in limited run tan.
The stocks that will be used for the rifle will be in the lightest color of the 3 color camo.

Non-black is starting to grow on me.

I never really liked camo ARs, but I’ve been seeing more and more that I really like lately. The Janitor’s is definitely on that list.

A guy on the local forum I post on recently had his painted by Joe @ Hero-Gear in Winchester TN, and I’m pretty sure I fell in love w/ the scheme:

Never thought about it blending in to things. I just like things to be different and not uniform all the time. I dig many of the schemes I see on this site.

Good point about black absorbing heat!

Great painted AR photos. I have nothing against either painted or black rifles…Definitely without a doubt, camo’ing your weapon is a tactical advantage, but if I ever had to actually USE it, it would be in my house and I doubt being black would have any impact on the end result.
On the other hand, those painted guns are some SWEET looking weapons! The Janitor’s kinda makes me consider spraying my own…

How long does spray paint last? Any dirty looks from camo-haters at the range?

Gunkote 2400 series, baked on, like on my rifle is impervious to Acetone and all bore cleaners, its a big step over Krylon.
Removal is done by media blasting. If I want to remove it I’d have to re-anodized the aluminum.

From KG Coatings data sheet on 2400: “Gun Kote 16/2 Flat Dark Earth was specified by the U.S. Military for use on SOCOM Special
Sniper Weapons (SPR’s) in 2003.” If it’s good enought for SOCOM its good enough for me.

I paint my gun because it’s my gun. Works ok when hunting hogs in the hot, dry fields.
When using it under the sun for an entire day, it doesn’t get as hot because it’s not black anymore.

Krylon holds on ok, but it depends how much someone puts into preparation work. I didn’t properly degrease my gun prior, so it’s coming off at a lot of places. But heck, it’s a tool, so I’m not picky about it anymore.

Although black ARs look great, they all start looking the same after a while.

You make a good point.

Yep! That is squared-the-F**k away.

I painted my AR tan and brown because no matter where you go, there is always going to be some tan, and some brown.

That’s no kidding! I went out with a buddy of mine last year and he had tags for 2 goats. 20 minutes out and he had one down. He set his painted rifle down and we started gutting that stinky bastard out. As soon as he got elbow deep into the blood, a nice goat comes to see what’s going on. He scrambled to find his painted rifle, but it blended in pretty well. I sat there and laughed at his scrambling around. Mainly because he was about 4 foot from the damn rifle. Anything painted tan out here in Wyoming is looking to get lost if you set it down. Yes, I know, keep track of your shit. Anyways, it was funny to watch him scramble. Mine will stay black and OD for the forseeable future, but some of the paint schemes I’ve seen are down right amazing! I just don’t have the talent to do such a thing.
