If you were buying a new AR rifle

What would you consider the best gun for the money ? I have looked at Sabre complete rifles, Anvil Arms complete lower , LMT complete lower and complete upper. I know Larue and Noveske are great but just too expensive for me. As for Colt are you getting all gun for your money or you paying partially for the name COLT? And before someone says use search do you not think i have done that already. Anytime I pay a grand for anything I do some research. I am just asking for some oponions from the guys hear that have a lot more experience with the AR platform than I do. Thanks for your time. All input appreciated.A;so if you have a recommendation where I should buy I would appreciate that also.

Why not get a Colt? Exactly the same (minus the barrel length and select fire) that the military uses. I’m sure you can’t go wrong with any major name brand AR Company. To each their own, much like why people buy certain brand cars or certain kinds of motorcycles…

Have you thought about building your own?

Colt, LMT, Noveske, Daniel Defense, Sabre Defence, Charles Daly M4LE models…hard to go wrong with any of them.

Right now, it seems the Colt and Daniel Defense rifles are the most plentiful of the quality AR’s on the market. LMT’s are starting to show up a bit more often lately. Prices are comparable. The others are harder to find and/or backordered for months.

Also, “The Chart” should help you find a rifle that fits your needs: http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=pwswheghNQsEuEhjFwPrgTA

For what it’s worth I like the Daniel Defense M4, I will probably pick one of those up for my next rifle.

depends on what kind of gun are you looking for: self/home defese, super accuracy at 1000k meters, plinking, etc

As for Colt are you getting all gun for your money or you paying partially for the name COLT?

yes, you pay a little extra for the name Colt (not only for Colt!) but there’s nothing wrong with it since it’s how the economy/marketing works.
99% of the time if you pay for the name you also pay a good QC.

I have to agree that a Colt 6920/6940 or a DDM4 are the best that are readily available right now.

I currently have a 6940 and have been thinking about getting a DD if I don’t pick up a PS90 this week.

Colt 6920. They are down to $1200 in some places now and that’s exactly what they are worth whether they say “Colt” on the side or not. Actually, Dean Caputo has said in the past that he can’t figure out how Colt can sell the 6920 for as little as they do, and I tend to agree.

I am a HUGE fan of BCM, Noveske, and LMT as well. They are all very close to the Colt in almost all areas and some even exceed in others (for example, I believe the Noveske N4 barrel to be the very best chrome-lined barrel you can buy).

One of the reasons I advocate the 6920 over some other makes/models is because it is a very high quality basic carbine, and you can start out knowing that everything that should be right, is. You’re not going to have to worry if this part or that part is made right or wrong, or assembled right or wrong, it just is. And starting in this way allows you to work up and decide for yourself what it is you want/need to add to the gun. I do think that the Noveske N4 is a better gun in many ways but good luck finding one right now, they sell for more than the Colt, and you may not really appreciate the areas where it is better right out of the gate.

This is really a great time in the market in terms of ARs. You have the likes of the Colt, BCM, LMT, and Noveske which all command a bit of a premium in some eyes but all of which actually offer something for that premium. At a slightly lower price point you have the Charles Daly, S&W, Sabre, Armalite, and CMMG, all of which are also priced very fairly (current or recent hysteria notwithstanding) and offer a very serviceable carbine as well.

What do you want it to do, and how much are you willing to pay?
What I would consider a perfect AR might be sorely lacking for someone with a different set of needs or wants.

Complete ARs under $2K that I think are really good deals.

Alphabetical order:

Colt 6920
Colt 6940
Daniel Defense M4 carbine
LMT Defender 2000 (plain M4 style)
S&W M&P15 VTAC rifle
S&W M&P15 MOE rifle
S&W M&P15T

Each of the above are different but for the ones with more bells and whistles, they are good deals if you’ll be adding that stuff anyway.

Youd be happy if you coined up for a Noveske M4 light recce.

I like the 6920 although I am not a koolaid drinker.

Its hard to beat a 6920, 6940 or LMT MRP. The DD rifle is also getting good reviews from many of its owners.

I have narrowed my search down to 3 (with a forth always out there). In no particular order: Noveske N4, LMT Defender, DDM4 and the forth being the one that never goes away the 6920. I have decided to wait until I get back to the states so I can handle and feel them and see what I am getting. That and it gives me more time to read up and do research and let the prices/stock catch up. You can’t go wrong with any of the suggestions in this thread. Just depends on how much you want to spend and what your plans are.

The DDM4 is a very good value…That being said…im picking up a new 6920 this week:D

I have a Colt 6940, which I changed the stock to SOPMOD and handgrip. I bought the basic LMT with SOPMOD stock on it and ergo grip. I really apprecaited having it the way I wanted it right out of the box. My point, it is a good value for the Noveske N4 at $1,800. It is a perfect rifle out the box. Great barrel, rail, stock, grip, no upgrades needed!

I also like the S&W rifles with the Magpul edition and some other versions with a Vltor set up. If you can stretch your dollars and get the “extras” up front, its a pretty good deal. Its all good, but they’re getting your money sooner or later. Get as much as you can stretch right away. Good luck and have fun.

“if I were buying a Gun” I would go to Impact guns on line and buy a 6940 for $1,500 right now! Somebody else posted it.

gotM4’s list is right on.

I think the DD M4 is the best deal of the bunch. Fathers Day sale at AIM Surplus has them for 1400 or so, shipped. Don’t see how anything can beat that right now. Add a light, sling and optic and for ~2k you’ve got one hell of a setup.

A 6940 at $1500 is appealing, but the DD has a few things going for it: I like the Magpul trigger guard, longer rail lets me try the 12:00 light position without getting extra stuff, built-in QD swivel in rail, and VFG is included.

The 6940 has the flippy downy front sight but I prefer fixed front sights, so no value added there IMO. I prefer folding rear sights, but I don’t like the one that comes with the 6940, so that’s kind of a toss up.

I have to agree. The DDM4 comes with a few extra goodies that I’ve added to my 6920 anyway. The only thing I’d add is a MAID grip and cut down the VFG to stubby size, Ixd also reposition it farther back (centered more).

It’s an excellent value!

Having sais that, my two most recent have been builds utilizing BCM uppers and plan on a few more. A SBR or two being amung them. It’s worth noting that $900-$1000 can duild you a quality AR. If wanting a quad rail it will run you a little more.

Nothing wrong with buying a quality AR for your first. Many of us have started that way.

I do plan to buy a new AR (M4 type) soon.

My plan is to buy an LMT (or, if the moon aligns, a Colt or Noveske) lower, then drop the 200 to have it registered as an SBR.

Once my stamp arrives I’ll pick up an LMT 10.5 to go on the lower.

This spreads the overall cost out and I get what I want. I can buy accessories like CTR stock, MIAD grip, etc. while I wait for the stamp to be processed.

This is only because I already have a 16", and I want an SBR, though.

If I wanted a 16" M4, I’d do the same except I’d leave out the NFA process and get a 16" upper instead.
