I shot the UZI with both subsonic and regular ammo. Although the regular had a little more volume, I definately didn’t feel any need for hearing protection. It was just pretty quiet either way.
That’s a fair question, and perhaps it means rifle cans are not for you.
The benefits of suppression go beyond just hearing-safe- recoil reduction, flash elimination, muzzle blast elimination, etc.
No matter how you slice it, the difference in experience between 165 dB unsuppressed and 135 dB suppressed is HUGE. Weather it’s one shot in an HD situation or all day at the range.
For comfort and safety, I like to wear a pair of SF earpro with the ports open when shooting centerfire rifles suppressed. In combination with the can, that keeps the sound around 115-120. I can easily hear conversations and the whole experience is comfortable.
If you want scary quiet, you can get a 308 or especially a 300 BLK shooting subsonics.
I think I finally get it. Comparing a pistol cartridge to a rifle cartridge, while suppressed, is apples and oranges. If you subsonic the rifle, so you don’t need protection. it’s fun. But then you lose the ballistic advantages on downrange performance. Thanks for helping me out, since I haven’t been around a suppressed rifle. I need to get out more!
Yeah, it really is different.
If you want to get a taste of everything… what are you doing in June?
Almost all the manufacturers will be there, you can see hear and shoot almost any configuration. Plus, get some live music, motocross, vendors, food, night shoot, etc. ![]()
How would it compare on a 10.5" barrel to my M4-2K SM4???
Thanks!!!

around 10 dB louder, not hearing safe, but you get the other benefits- cut flash, blast, recoil, etc. You’ll definitely want a light set of plugs though.
Thanks Jason!!!
I have a M4-2K mod08, M4-2K SM4 mod06, and a M4-1K mod08, what’s db difference in the three on a 10.5" if the Mini4 is 10db less than the SM4??? I honestly can’t tell much difference between the three when shooting w/o hearing protection.
I’m wanting another 5.56 can, but really don’t want anything longer than M4-2K, but thought the Mini4 would work good in a pinch if it ever had to used for other reasons than plinking w/o making my ears bleed. Anything is better than the 10" un-canned.

PM’ed you
Jason,
what is the timeline for mini4’s. I have one on order with American Reaper Arms.

To protect other people from the boom of my SBR is one of the main reasons I put my can on.
Alone on an outdoor range, the boom of the SBR doesn’t bother me since I wear plugs and muffs. But go to a training class where you work closely as a team, a public range, or heaven forbid an indoor range it’s best to be polite IMO.
The Mini 4 might get me to finally upgrade from my 416-SD (from back when they were shorter than the M4-2000). Though my 416-SD has a lot of character marks.
I love the way the 416-SD looks.
I love the 416SD as well. Its one of the early ones in the first 5 made. I has withstood a lot of full auto LMG fire and still looks new. Has the old SCARMOR finish that’s so damn tough.

The serial on mine is in the first 20, unless they used a different first letter.
Anyone actually gotten one yet?
Only a few are ‘in the wild’.
The bulk of them are sitting waiting on form 3’s from the ATF…
I ask all my “shops” and there is no sightings in AZ yet, per my friends
I am still patiently waiting…
Is that quieter than 5.56?
with subsonics.
with super it is not quieter, but it’s different than 5.56… not quite as sharp…
