Has anyone reloaded using the hornady zmax ammo in .223. I could care less and the zombie theme, but the bullets are considerably cheaper than alot of the others I’ve seen lately. I’m interested in the 55g if it matters.
I’m not a reloader myself even though I’ve slowly been learning now for a yr. or so. That said, here is some info that may help…
The 55gr. ZMAX is the exact same projectile as the 55gr. VMAX…except it has the addition of a cannulure and a different colored tip.
I have extensively tested the factory loaded 55gr. ZMAX vs. the 55gr. VMAX and like you may suspect the cannulured ZMAX had slightly larger groups.
AVG of 3 groups…10rds/100yds
Hornady 55gr. VMAX .97 MOA
Hornady 55gr. ZMAX 1.14 MOA
So the 55gr. VMAX squeezes out a bit more accuracy…the 55gr. ZMAX squeezes out a bit more lethality or fragmentation.

I have heard that the Z-max was closer to the A-max vs V-max. that the Z-max uses the same plating technolodgy as the A-max, where the V-max uses more traditional molding…Kinda makes sense if you look at component prices. Was told this, open to be corrected, not saying is correct…
Its the same bullet as the V max which is a good varmit bullet. I just picked some up. Only difference is the color of the tip according to a Hornady rep I spoke with.

TRIDENT82 what gun, barrel length and twist are you using?
I load a 55g Vmax with 25.3g of TAC for my Remington 700 SPS TAC that does .4-5 MOA. My 50g Vmax BT load with TAC will do .3 MOA.
Lastly my 55 Vmax load with 27.3g Varget will do inside .3 MOA and under 1 inch at 200 yards.
Here is the first really good group with the 50g Vmax BT load with TAC, I’ve since done a little better with my new stock

Cool. I’m gonna order some and see what kind of results I get. I got a deal on IMR 8208. It’s the first time I’ve used it too se we’ll see
