Is this a bad idea for a rifle used for Home Defense?
Would the flash be that much worse than a .357 Mag?
This would go on a Bushy M4 w/16" barrel

Yes, assuming it has a threaded barrel.
A muzzle brake is loud on an open firing line. Gonna be even LOUDER in a hallway…
Unless you’re in an area that restricts FH’s, I’d go that route - but that’s just my opinion…
I never understood the concern over the loudness of a break indoors. If you are shooting an M-4 indoors without hearing protection you are either very stupid or fighting for your life. In that case possible hearing loss drops way down the list of concerns. Comps don’t alter the laws of physics. The amount of sound created by a gun with a break is no greater than one without a break. It just alters the direction of the sound waves travel as the gas leaves the barrel and in a small confined space those sound waves bounce all over the place regardless of what you hang off the end of a gun. Either way your ears are going to be exposed to a sound strong enough to permanently damage your hearing.
I see your point, there. Was reading it more as if the owner was deciding whether to select a brake as a muzzle device on a HD weapon - not so much as if a rifle that happened to have a brake was a good choice for a HD rifle.
I’d personally opt for a FH - but more out of concerns for the chance of catching the blast (and accompanying detritus that’s blown along with it) when firing from a position that doesn’t leave one lined up directly behind the rifle. Is it a deal breaker? Probably not. But there are plenty of other distractions to assail me during a situation such as that, why add to it. Get into some odd positions that leave you hanging out to the side of a comp’d rifle - around corners, laterally proned out, etc - and see what you might catch in the eyes/face beyond just “sound”.
Again, probabably an esoteric concern.
I’d boil it down to whichever device you find to serve your needs better:
A) Less Felt Recoil
B) Less Muzzle Flash
Then, once you decide on a route, learn it’s shortcomings and train/prepare to either diminish them or push through them.
I’m sure plenty of experienced shooter run brakes in your application - ping them for info here, and see what they’ve identified as possible issues.
The YHM 5C1 & 5C2 have properties that are more consistent with that of a flash suppressor than a compensator. I haven’t noticed any noise/blast increase when comparing these two to a standard A2 or A1 FS.
This is the one I was looking at…

I have to take my A2 off to install free float handguard and was waying my options to buy this or just keep the A2 on the muzzle
I would look at this one, the bottom of the page has video of the flash suppreson as well as how well the break works. I just had one put on mine:D
Stick with the A2. Unless I need a silencer mount on the end of a barrel, I never us anything other than the A2… even on SBRs.
