XDM Reviews?

Tried a search on here looking for info on the Springfield XDM and found nothing, anyone have an opinion on the weapon? I was thinking about looking into purchasing one, maybe for a carry weapon… any thoughts?

I hope Im not just slow finding out if its a low quality gun.

Good not great to sum it up.

I have VERY limited time with the XDm, but have owned a variety of XD’s in the popular calibers. All three managed to have periodic failures more often then I cared for. I just did not find them to be as reliable as my Glock, and so far my M&P is holding a better track record as well.

I also don’t care for guns with grip safeties, but that’s more of a personal thing.

Or if you don’t like a lot of reading I can simply everything and tell you they suck

You just did.
Look into Glocks and S&W M&Ps. Quality is much better. (assuming you are looking for a striker fired weapon)

I figured there was a reason no one else posted anything, the other gun I was looking at was a M&P 9mm

my brother in law bought one despite me telling him not to. he fell for the flash of the duo tone and it having 19 rd mags. he tried and tried, but couldnt get that thing to group worth a crap no matter what load. i bit my tongue as he suckered his brother into buying it. now he shoots Glock and seems very pleased with his G17

I think Sarah Palin reviewed one when she was campaigning for VP.

“You can put lip stick on a pig…”

*note- just an opinion. I have no experience with an XDm, nor do I plan to.

I have two of them. I have used them in five different high round count classes without issue. I have 10K+ through one and 3K+ through the other. The bad news is that the factory triggers suck. I had Springer Precision do trigger jobs on both of mine. I come from a 1911 background and I really like the way the XDMs balance and handle. They are as accurate as any other plastic pistol. Mine have been as reliable as a Glock and much more reliable than most M&Ps. As far as parts go, you can get everything but the extractor, (I have no idea why you can’t get it).

Substantiate this claim with some proof. What does much more reliable than an M&P mean?

This begs the question of how many M&P’s you’ve dealt with…

I have witnessed a lot of lt primer strikes on M&Ps, I sold one to custumer NIB that wouldn’t fire, I have personally known a half dozen owners who broke strikers (myself included), numerous extraction issues with the 9mms, and magazines falling out. S&W sent me a striker and a different extractor right away. As soon as I mentioned that I was having extraction issues the customer svc rep said “you have a 9mm don’t you”. Apparently there is a known problem with the extractors that becomes an issue with the nines.

Guess all the bad M&P’s went to your area…never seen any issues with the ones by me, with one I’ve seen over 13k rounds, no cleaning.

I’m sure if we dig deep enough, we can find someone who can report a high round count and no issues with a Raven 380. Although highly unlikely, the point that I am trying to make is that it would be an exception to the rule. A Glock or M&P have been proven. I own several of both pistols and I can be confident that any of those will be reliable enough to defend myself and my family. I lean in favor of the Glock because of the MINOR issues I have had with the M&P but I lean that way because I have been shooting the Glock for about 14 years now. I just can’t figure out why some people are so attached to a platform like the XD when the only way to make them shoot even close to as reliable to the Glock or M&P is to basically replace all of the parts.

I think it is unreasonable that ANY one individuals experience with any platform is sufficient to dismiss it or categorically label it ‘unreliable’ or ‘not good’.

That said, a number of well informed, knowledgeable collectively PREFER not to have an XD, but rather an M&P (or likely the site love-in baby, the G19).

Given time on M4C you will probably see carry/preferred pistol is a G19 first and an M&P second. Nothing ‘wrong’ with the XD, just not ‘what is required’ by the board populace.

I’ve had it, I liked it. I don’t anymore. Others are ‘better’.

Very well put and on point!

You’ll find a lot of forums leaning more towards the Glock and M&P over the XD…not just M4C.

I shot with an XD guy last weekend. The week before he told me how great his XD’s were, how they worked great for him, etc. etc.

During about two hours of intensive shooting, three of his four guns began to fail regularly. My M&P’s had no such trouble. He ate his crow, and now he’s getting an M&P45.

My first gun was an XD40, and I have shot plenty of XD40s, 9s, and 45’s in various configurations. My observations are as follows:

-XD’s have higher muzzle rise than either M&P’s or Glocks.
-XD’s have more perceived recoil than M&P’s or Glock.
-XD’s have the worst stock trigger of the three (mushy with long reset), and it is the most expensive to fix. Glock connectors and M&P apex sets are cheap and easy to install yourself.
-It is difficult for someone with large hands to use a thumbs forward grip on the XD because of its frame geometry.
-I occasionally lose contact with the grip safety and the gun fails to fire.
-It is harder to find replacement and aftermarket parts for XD’s.
-XD’s are less modular and harder to work on if you can get the parts.
-Large law enforcement agencies with serious shooters who methodically evaluate pistols have not adopted the XD.
-Professional trainers such as Todd who see a tremendous number of shooters and guns observe a higher rate of failure in XD’s than Glocks or M&P’s.

Like most guns, the M&P had some teething issues four years ago when it first came out. Smith addressed the striker and mag drop issues long ago. Plenty of LEO’s and trainers who post here can attest to how large numbers of issued M&P’s are performing in the field, and the feedback is overwhelmingly positive. The 2010 M&P is by all accounts a very durable and reliable gun supported by a company with strong customer service.

Some valid points I am sure…however:

I think you mean people with small hands. I cant fathom how a person with large hands has a problem getting a solid thumbs forward grip on any XD.

I also dont see how one whos hands actually FIT the XD has a problem engaging the grip safety each time they commit. This has never once become an issue and is inconceivable for me…maybe I have spent too much time with mine I dont know.

Not arguing or contesting your experience I just cant visualize it for the life of me… If the hands dont fit I can definately see these issues but not with some whos hands truly fit that gun. Many paws dont. That is the XD.

As far as the XDM like the OP asked, the above becomes completely moot since the grips interchange sizes and there is no reason anyone should be experiencing those problems.

Then again…YMMV.

The striker issue is well known and generally is not a problem on the 2nd gen strikers provided you use snap caps. As yet no one has ever documented a striker failure under live fire that I am aware of, only with dryfire. The extractor issues were the result of using the same extractor on multiple calibers, a decision S&W reversed after finding that ammunition with small rims (like Winchester White Box) sometimes got missed by the overly large extractors.

Despite these issues there are departments who have issued the M&P in various calibers for years with no serious issues to speak of. Not just half a dozen…hundreds, and the adoption came after significant trials and testing. The XD has been submitted to a number of trials and has generally come up short for a number of reasons.

If I remember correctly, in last August’s or September’s “American Rifleman” I read where the M&P was then approved for use, or being used by 500 U.S. Police Depts, About that same time frame S&W announced they had landed a contract for 4000 pistols to Austraila (sp?) for some type of state police? Not bad for a pistol that’s only been around for 5-6 yrs. Last I heard, the XD was approved for use or being used by 100 U.S. police depts…That’s after being imported for 10yrs…That says alot…

I had a XD45…(4"service model) there were too many little “annoyances” that caused me to dump it after 8 months of ownership. Would’nt feed LSWC’s, I reload, so this is important to me, Weak mag springs after 1000 rnds, the springs quit working reliably, and this is not a new complaint. Other things like the loaded chamber indicator would stick up after a few hundred rounds rendering it useless…(it’s a gimmick anyway) I could go on, but, this has already been covered in many posts here, So to the OP, do a search and you’ll find out alot…
