XD9mm Where were you guys 3 months ago?

My first post in guns section here, so go easy on me guys. Five years ago I was all ready to buy a Glock17, after a lifetime of revolvers. I tried the Glock and then tried a XD9 and really liked the grip angle ergonomics etc. and settled on the XD, because “its just as good as the Glock, just different.” Then life reared its ugly head and any pistol purchases were quickly forgotten. Fast forward to 3 months ago. I found a “gently used” XD9 Tactical for about $150 less than a brand new Glock. Wow says I remembering the research I did five years ago. “Its just as good as Glock and for less money.” So I purchased it. Due to work considerations it sat for several weeks before I could fire it. By then I found M4Carbine and started researching the XD’s. My, how the perceptions have changed since 2006 when I started researching that pistol. No matter, I’ll just order some upgraded roll pins and a trigger kit from Bownells, right? Hmm not so much. Since I happen to live in the great Socialist Dominion of Canada, Brownells won’t ship the roll pins and trigger parts north, because the manufacturer is not export licensed. And there is NO support that I can find for these pistols anywhere up here, no parts, no service no nothing. Crap, well lets hope for the best. First 500 rounds no problem, well except that pesky roll pin creeps creeping up. 1000rds, hmm, grip safety no longer disengages…okay readjust the grip gun fires, reload, gun is frozen, the grip safety has failed and I can’t unload the live round. Long story short, after lots of movement (brass mallet) the grip safety engaged and allowed me to rack out the live round. Nearest XD dealer is a three hour one way drive away and he tells me not to expect to see the gun back this year from any factory work. He offered me half of what I paid for it on trade for a new Gen4 Glock17:jester: I think I may take him up on it. Damn where were you guys 3 months ago???

Yup should’ve bought a Glock and been done with it. Live and learn.

Sorry to hear about your situation with the pistol, but don’t forget that experience can be a fair trade. You have to do to learn, and many of us have learned the hard way under similar circumstances.

That said, I say go for the Glock.

You learned hard lesson…you can’t polish a turd, no matter how hard you try…ditch the XD, get the Glock, and drive on…

I would read up on Gen 4 Glocks before deciding to take the plunge.

Springfield Armory’s customer service is second to none…did you call them?

My XDM 3.8 has over 3500 trouble free rounds.

I can’t comment on Springfield’s current warranty service, but I don’t understand why so many people want to go to dealers with these problems instead of to the manufacturer. When I was selling guns we would take them in from time to time for warranty service, but the customer would have been better off sending it in themselves rather than going through us.

I would suggest getting in touch with Springfield directly and talking to them about the problems you’re having.

Since the pesky US/Canada export/import laws make sending a handgun virtually impossible across the border for an individual, I called Springfield USA. My call to Springfield went like this…“Your calling from where? Canada? Where?? Sorry sir you’ll have to call xxx-xxx-xxxx. They look after problems up there.” Three weeks no reply to voicemail and absolutely no response to the email. Live and learn, too damn bad it costs so much.:stuck_out_tongue:

Kinda reminds me of my fling with the Lee Pro 1000 press.:bad: Yup now own a Dillon. Man I should know better by now. Thanks for your responses gentlemen.

Man, you don’t know the flak I’ve taken on Canadian Gun Nutz trying to warn people about the XD.

People REALLY do not like to be told that the gun they’ve decided to buy, or have already bought, is not as good as another gun.

I understand when people are attached to a gun they’ve bought…but I really don’t get the guys who ask for opinions on a gun they’re “researching” and then, when you explain the issues with that gun, they get in a huff and buy it anyway.

Anyway, experience is, as they say, the thing you get right after you really needed it. A pricey lesson in a way, but then…a few hundred dollars is not that much to pay for the principle you just learned. When it comes to guns that you need, or even just really want, to work, GO WITH KNOWN QUANTITIES!

I’m amazed that there are still people out there that think that, for example, 9mm Glocks are common just because they’re cheap or on TV or whatever. Man…we know what guns work. When it comes to tools, don’t play snowflake…just use what every other pro is using, because it’s working.

Anyway that’s not directed at you, just a by-product of too much time in the CGN Pistols and Revolvers forum.

I think the ability to say "I was wrong/screwed up/made a bad choice is very important to growing up. Some people never do. I kept telling myself, “Its okay, its just the internet talking, your XD will be fine.” HA! I hope not to many people from CGN are here I may have to get that thing repaired and try and sell it on the EE.

Surely you find a Glock cheaper in the local 'hood…

Some, but not many…I would get it fixed, sell it there to one of the many people for whom it would be perfectly adequate, and get something else.

This is a critical stage in gun development IMO…the point at which you begin to value proven guns, and become highly skeptical of 99% of the “I have one it’s great” posts on the internet.

Over the course of the last 16 months I’ve dumped almost 3/4 of my collection. All the cheap guns, weird calibers and collectables/customs" are gone. I am now concentrating on just a few high quality firearms in basic calibers, .22lr, 9mm, .45ACP, .308, .223, .300WIN. With a back up of each one. My mistake was not doing any new research on the XD. Lesson learned: keep your research up to date and more isn’t always better. Except ammo, more ammo is always better.

Glock purchase update. Just made a offer on a new Gen3 G17, only 200 rounds down the pipe. $515 CDN shipped. I hope I get it.

Sucks that you had problems…my XD’s been trouble free for probably 5k rounds now, been through about 3 classes and a couple years worth of ipsc/steel challenge matches and ran like a pro.

That being said if mine behaved like yours did I’d ditch it too.

Good to see you went with a Gen 3 glock instead of a Gen 4…it would have sucked to sell a problematic gun only to get a new one that could have potentially given you more issues.

Sucks you got a lemon. I’m on my 5th XD and I’ve never had a problem.

Wanted a Glock 19 and went in for one and ended up highly pressured by the salesman who dealt with me to get an XD for various reasons (got double recoil springs which is so much better and more reliable and less prone to breaking, grip safety, the chamber loaded indicator is blabla, cocked indicator, etc) and ended up leaving with the Glock 19, what can you say I am one of those asses who leaves with what I set in to get :secret:

Anyhow some years later I wanted a full sized mostly as a range toy and at this point the XDm was out and some acquaintances had them and liked them so I looked into it some and bought XDm9. Nothing really horrible to report but it is more prone to not go bang when I want it to like the Glock, grip is a little bit off, doesn’t point like the Glock, and all that fun stuff. Really I have to say that at least the XDm series (cannot vouch really for XD) is all right but there is likely a better gun out there for each individual in my opinion as I don’t see it being “the best” for a few reasons.

Reason why I am saying this is because there are probably people like me who did snoop around about XDs and XDms and bought one anyway because I honestly felt like a lot of the nay sayers seemed out of place (second hand accounts, facts based off older ones, things that just don’t click) so from a first hand experience it is decent and I would use it over various other pistols, there is just better out there and as I said it was intended more as a “range toy” where if I was looking for a full sized to replace my Glock 19 is would have been a Glock 17.

Tiresome.

Glocks also malfunction. There are examples all over the internet. Believe it or not I’ve actually seen one lock up in person. Delayed our class while the glock fanboy aka glock armorer aka instructor tried to get it to run. He never did get it to run and ended up loaning the guy a ruger .22 to use.

I may never fit in with the cool kids but I’m getting along fine with my xd’s, fnp’s and 1911.

If the OP had bought a Glock with these issues in Canada, how is the GLOCK/Canada CS? S.A. CS is outstanding stateside.

Go Gen3 Glock and don’t have to worry.

Sorry to hear about your troubles, OP. Only reason I have the XD is because the fiancees EX left it when he moved out 4 years ago. what a nice surprise to find buried in the closet. I own both and the Glock is already my favorite. I’m a 1911 guy so the grip safety doesn’t bother me on the XD but the composition, grip angle, width, etc. is superior on the Glock IMO. People speak of the XD having a better trigger…frankly I can’t tell the difference. If I want to shoot something with a great trigger, I’ll look to a 1911 most likely. I don’t expect much from DA guns.

A lot of friends have gotten sucked into XDs instead of Glocks because of the XDm package…ya know the magazine pouch, ‘holster’, etc. None of them have since touched any of the M excessories

My springfield XD 45 compact is pretty much my favorite pistol of all time. No stoppages or malfunctions ever.
Im sorry to hear about your luck though, that’s why I avoid used guns.
