Early today, Cabelas in Rogers MN remained well stocked with a pretty good variety of rounds at stable prices. Rem, PMC, Herters, Black Hills, AE, Herters, Hornady, Federal/LC, Fiocchi, Wolf. This, despite it being “Hometown Heroes” day for public safety and mil/vets. You could have walked out with thousands if you wanted to.
A Dicks not far away was well stocked too, along with some LGSs.
Those having trouble at your own LGSs may want to have them call up and see what the Viking secret is.
In my neck of the woods (S. Florida), there is pretty much nothing available…
Bass Pro shops had a few boxes of Winchester Fusion. That’s it.
Wally World has nothing in common rifle calibers.
The LGS’s are gouging buyers with $240 for 420 round cans.
Wideners is out of stock on anything reasonably priced.
The gun shows have been no relief. Last one I went to in October, the cheapest case of X855 (PMC) was $450. Not really a bargain when factoring in parking, entrance fee and sales tax.
SGAmmo is sold out of pretty much everything except high-dollar specialty ammo and tracers.
Palmetto State Armory has jacked up prices on what little they have left. They have M855 at .050/round now.
I, for one, would like a couple of cases of X855 at a reasonable price without resorting to Wolf or any lower grade stuff. Not to hoard, which seems to be prevalent (and prudent, I guess), but to actually shoot. For many, myself included, reloading is not an option. We are at the mercy of the market…
I don’t think we will see the return of sub-$300 1,000 round cases anytime soon, but this is getting ridiculous and is pricing many people out of the sport.
My questions are:

You have Georgia Arms, Black Hills, etc., but their prices are pretty high. The small guys just can’t compete with the larger ones on bulk ammo prices.

Drive up to the Orlando area. A couple of weeks ago, every store I was in had full shelves of guns and ammo gathering dust.

A few days ago I got a package from UPS…1k PMC Bronze .223 that was delivered for $336. The best price I know of for that, right now, in stock, is $380 delivered.

Ammo prices bounce around for a number of reasons, clearly supply & demand. We all know folks are buying stuff up after the election.
Don’t forget QE1,2, 3 … The value of the dollar had dropped, meaning it takes more dollars to buy a pound of copper, lead and tin than it did 1 year ago. (just like a barrel of oil)
I was stupid last year when the Fed dumped dollars into the system. I missed out on $129 500 rd case of M193 thinking the price would come down even more. I saw the news this summer about the latest round of QE and I picked up another 1,000 rds of M193 before the cost increase can work it’s way into the market.
What I have learned is if you see ammo prices fall, don’t get all comfortable with low prices and high supply. Instead buy it up, especially in this political climate.
About two years ago, prices were pretty low and stayed that way for a while. All through this I knew Obama was coming up for re-election and our economy looked like it wasn’t bouncing back.
I just kept buying ammo as I could, and as i came across deals. Places like PSA sometimes had promotions like free shipping.
Now I have enough ammo to last me training for 18 months and enough back up ammo, and defense ammo on top of that.
Chances are in 18 months ammo prices will be back down, and I can replenish my stock.
Yep. Thats pretty much the way I have been buying lately as well. Maybe a little more piece meal, which is not as good as buying whole cases.
Consider implementing a “one box rule.” Each trip to the LGS, Walmart, or other location at which ammo is available, leave with one box in a caliber you can use. Easy way to maintain inventory with smaller cash outlays.
I shoot too much to maintain by buying one box at a time.
Now, if that meant going to the range/shop to shoot, and buying enough to replace everything that was shot PLUS an extra box…well, it still wouldn’t be enough to maintain, but it would be closer.
When ammo prices jump I stop shooting large quantities of ammo.
