Wolf Small Rifle Magnum 5.56 Primers?

Wondering if anyone has tried the new Wolf Small Rifle Magnum 5.56 Primers yet. I typically order the standard SRM primers but Wideners was out of stock when I placed the order so I went with the newer 5.56 “Hotter” primers. They just came in today so I haven’t had time to try them out. I hope I like them as much as the standard SRM primers.

I’m not quite possitive, but those look like tandard SR primers, the softest primers Wolf produces. Those are suitable for .222, 218 Bee, other lower pressure 22 centerfire loads.

The two options they offer for 5.56 loads are labeled SRM and something else which I can’t remember. Maybe these are the latest/hotetst versions, just not sure. I’d call the vendor and verify you received what you were trying to order.

I have erad elsewhere that their latest primer, however it’s labeled, has a higher amount of compound, combined with a harder cup. The other primers have a smaller amount of compound, with just the cup hardness being the difference. Just can’t remember how the standard SR primer is labeled/boxed.

Those primers are fine for 223 they are not the magnum ones that most people use, but they are not just for lower pressure rounds like 22hornet.

The only small rifle primer that should not be loaded in AR’s are rem 6 1/2’s, and there are wolf standard srp that should not be used. The packaging just says small rifle primer. Some say you should not use win primer, but they are fine they may show pressure a little early but they are fine.

If you have had those for a while you might want to check the lot number. If they are new they should be fine. There was a lot a while ago that would not reliably light ball powders. Magnum primers are recommended for ball powders, but it is not always necessary. I had some from the bad lot so i just used extruded powder with them.

Edited to add: the ones you want to stay away from like jmart recommended just say small rifle primer on the package. If the packaging says small rifle 223 or small rifle magnum they are good to go for the AR. Next time your looking to order make sure you get the kvb556m. The ones you got are kvb223m.

Wideners is describing these as the latest version which are “hotter” than the Magnums.

“SMALL RIFLE 223 (part # QQQSR223) NEW NEW This is the newest primer available in the Wolf line. It is ever so slightly hotter than the small rifle magnum primer and it comes with a brass or copper colored thick cup. This primer can be used in place of the SRM primer or used when a different powder is used that is hard to ignite.”

I’ve not tried those. So Wideners is out of the regular Magnume Primers now? :frowning:

Nah, they got more in stock literally the same day these showed up. I’ve been using the standard SRM with success but gonna give these a shot now.

I bet they’re just as consistent. Keep us posted.

5.56 SRM Wolf Primers are $14.50 per 1000 or $14.00 if you order 5000 or more. I ordered 10,000. That will last me a long long time

$14.50/K? Where?
That is a great price, would like to get some.

Thanks,
Mark

Never mind; checked Wiedner’s, but they are out of stock. Still a great price. Brownell’s carries them, but much more expensive.

Get in their notification list. I’ve ordered over 100k of them over the past two weeks and they get them back in stock frequently. The key is to order in bulk to keep cost down. I do bulk orders with out guys so we can all benefit.

I’ve been working up some loads lately, and so far worked up 70gr TSX with Varget and Wolf SRM primers in LC brass as well as a load for 62gr TBBC with WC844 and Wolf SRMs in LC brass…

100% functional with Varget

However, with WC844, I had about 3 rounds where the powder wasn’t ignited and about 6-7 hang fires out of 35 rounds loaded for the load workup.

I bought these about 3-4 months ago, so they should be new stock.

What really sucks is I was planning on using these for all my plinking loads and for the TBBC, so I bought in bulk

I had that same shit happen with H335…

Ditched the powder since the primers are the better component.

The primers must not like Double Based Spherical powders.

Just got a chance to look, and the lot number was “29-09”. How is that supposed to read?

Also, I did a Google search (trying to find out how to read the lot number) and read that a guy called Wolf, got a refund, and sent his primers back. Anyone here try that?

They quit giving refunds. Are you married to that nasty powder?

You could easily sell those primers to someone else if you have a ton of that powder.

Any update OP? Curious to see how your Wolf “223 Primers” performed, particularly with ball powder(h335 & wc844)

Well I’ve got a few jugs of it…I suppose I could sell it since there are plenty of people that use it.

My options are to either get primers to use specifically with the WC844 (although I don’t know which one will reliably ignite the powder) and use the WOLF for precision loads, or just switch over entirely to another powder.

I was thinking about looking into H322 per your suggestion, Mark, since I will also be shooting heavier grain bullets and you’ve seen pretty good success with the WOLF/H322 combo. Before I jump in though, I need a no BS assessment of the H322 powder from you :stuck_out_tongue:

[li]Since it’s a faster burning powder, how much velocity will you be losing over, say, Varget?
[/li][li]The accuracy you’ve gotten is obvious, but due to the velocity loss (assumption at this point), have you seen any issues shooting at distance with bullet drop/bucking wind?
[/li][li]How far out have you shot these?
[/li][li]How well does it meter in a 550B? I usually get +/-1gr with Varget, with the occasional +/-2 in my limited experience loading it.
[/li][/ul]

The faster burn rate has neither hurt function or velocity… Pappabear and I were talking about how “on paper” this combo doesn’t appear optimal…

But in practice it’s unbeatable. And in fact… a faster burn powder means you burn a little more in the shorter barrels… A slow powder would puke a bunch of unburnt out the muzzle.

We shoot the 77s out to 1000 yards with his 20" Bolt gun regularly. And we got a few hits with a 14.5" at a thousand a week ago.

The 69 grains fly perfectly with the reticle on the various ACOGs that pappabear runs… so the ammo compares to M855 in trajectory.

I’ll see if pappabear has any specific Chrono handy… But I don’t sense ANY downside. In fact… I have the 77 gr load in several of my ARs mags for Defensive use.

I did that frag test with the 77, and was so blown away by it’s performance, I loaded a bunch for defensive use.

Thanks for the response Mark, I think I’ll go ahead and order some. It’s like twice the cost of WC844 lol, but I’m hoping it will be a “do all” powder for me so I can consolidate down to only one powder and one primer.

Have you found it to meter well in a 550? I wanna say I’ve read you say that it does, but want to make sure.

Oh, and anyone here want to buy some WC844 for cheap? I’ll put a listing out in the next couple days…

H322 and Benchmark both meter great in my 550.
