Which carbine stock for a Remington 870?

I have an old but great condition 870 Wingmaster passed on to me that I’m in the process of making more suitable for social, rather than sporting, work. I wanted some adjustment in LOP, and got a good deal on a Mesa Tactical LEO stock adapter, and now I need to decide what to hang off of it. I’m leaning towards a Magpul CTR, because it’s light, relatively inexpensive, and gives me the option to add a cheek riser later if i want to add a red dot, but wanted to fish for suggestions first. Will the CTR work well? My biggest concern is that it may be TOO light, and give less than ideal balance with an 18.5" barrel & +2 mag extension. Am I off base there?

Also, anything I should be aware of when choosing a pistol grip? It looks like I should avoid anything with a high backstrap (like the Magpul MOE) with the Mesa adapter. Anything else anyone has found out the hard way that I need to look out for?

I tried a CTR but ended up with an STR for weight and cheek weld reasons. It makes it a bit clunky though. I use a BCM mod 0 grip.

I’d go for a BCM Mod 0 grip and stock… I just happen to like both a lot.

Though, and I realize it’s a bit late, I really like the Magpul SGA shotgun stock much better than any AR stock adapter I’ve used on an 870. Adjustable LOP, cheek risers available, and excellent ergos for shotgun handling.

I was actually strongly leaning towards the Magpul SGA, but decided I’d rather have a pistol grip. And with the deal I got on the adapter, I’m going to end up with a pistol grip and adjustable carbine stock for about the same price as the SGA.

I built one with the high tube adapter from Mesa. I chose the high tube due to the fact that it put the sight line up in the same/similar height as my rifle. It also came with the section of rail that allowed for mounting of a RDS/Optic. I will admit, after the hassle it gave my fitting it to the shotgun I’ll never build another.

Aside from that, I actually ran a UBR minus the small access doors. it may sound goofy, but it actually balanced very well once shouldered.

With the UBR being a little heavier, I could see that and was actually thinking that prior to reading your post. Makes sense

Doesn’t the UBR go on a rifle extension? Can you just screw the rifle extension on the Mesa adapter and ignore the missing indexing dimple?

I run a SOPMOD on mine. I was given a handful a while back. I also have the two shot extension and the 8 shot side saddle.

I went through some of the same questions myself, and luckily I have a lot of spare parts sitting around to try out configurations. This is just my opinion, and the weight issue did not factor in for me as mine has a 12.5" barrel so there’s much less weight hanging out front.

I found that for anyone that runs the stock collapsed for shorter lop, that the friction lock on the CTR is right up against your hand and is uncomfortable. With the MOE and no friction lock, there is better clearance.

Also as to the grip, the ones without the beaver tail backstrap left a tight wedge where your thumb wraps around that I did not find comfortable. Taking one with a beaver tail backstrap and using a dremel to take off part so that it is flush with the bottom of the adapter was much more comfortable but you have to be careful to leave it flush so it doesn’t catch.
