I was about to order a rifle buffer tube, buffer, and spring but thought I might be missing something. I’m going to run a 14.5" mid gas upper w/ an A2 stock and am wondering about the buffer. From searching I think the standard rifle buffer is 5.2 oz and the H carbine buffer is 3.8 oz. (Could be wrong) Am I going to have cycling issues using the standard rifle buffer? Do they even make a lighter weight rifle buffer? Am I over thinking it?
As pointed out… the weight of the buffers isn’t a direct comparison. The spring tension and cycle are different too.
The rifle buffer has been soft stroking on my 14.5 mid lately. We rigged the upper onto a Full Auto with the A5 buffer… which is effectively a rifle buffer system… and that mofo ran like a BAR!!
Although it ran slow… it did lock back on empty.
It’s the strangest thing because the Middy seemed to run the rifle buffer much better when it was new. Now it quite often won’t lock back with .223 ammo.
Vltor has a lighter buffer on the A5 system specifically for the 14.5 mid guns.
I’ve also seen where Robb Jensen and one or two others have swapped swapped a tungsten weight out of their A5 buffer with a steel weight from a regular H buffer. You could give that a try also.
Hmmm. I guess I’ll wait until I get it up and running, put some rounds through it, and then worry about it. If I have any issues maybe I’ll try pulling a weight out of the standard rifle buffer so I can stick with a fixed stock.
