What's the deal with the Surefire X400?

Anyone know the real issue Surefire is having with the X400? It’s now been about a year in delays. I called in Oct of '08 and asked and was told it would be released in Nov. Called then and was told Dec. Called mid Jan and was told for sure the first of Feb. I waited until the end of Feb and was told April or May.

OverToad, thanks for asking this question. I am wondering about the delays myself. Yesterday I talked to a person at Surefire CS (didn’t get a name) and was told that the X400 won’t be available til April 27th. Didn’t ask why it’s been delayed so much.

My wife is very interested in the x400; she has an X200b with DG-11 remote switch, and CTC Laser Grips (LG-619) on her home defense Glock 19. She wants to replace the x200b with the x400 so she can ditch the CTC Laser Grips, yet still have an instinctively-activated laser. The Laser Grips/Glock combo doesn’t fit her hands well; the Glock grip by itself does fit her hand.

Just got off the phone and Surefire advised the X400 should be available at Surefire dealers any day as they have started to release them. The X400 will be available to buy direct from Surefire on May 21st if for those wanting the Leo discount.

FWIW, at least one online retailer is now stating on its site that it has the X400 “in stock”. I ordered one from them, and that site’s automated order software says that I’m scheduled to receive it on Thursday, May 7. Haven’t received any notice of shipping from them yet, though. I’ll post on Thursday afternoon as to whether I receive it.

There’s also some traffic on the CandlePower Forum’s marketplace section indicating that another online retailer may have them in stock, as well. I’ve not been able to find any other website that states that they have the X400 in stock, though. As of earlier today, Surefire’s own site still wasn’t allowing a person to order the X400 online.

They don’t wanna put out stuff that has issues, so they’re fixing issues before releasing it. The laser is freakin’ bright, though. I can verify that. I had a prototype on loan for viewing purposes for several weeks. I gotta get one. i wrote a bit about it on my blog here:

My #1 issue is how well the laser maintains zero. In many ways it’s the pistol manufacturers’ fault because “universal” rails are so loosely standardized. While I see a light/laser combo as a distant second place option to a dedicated light and Lasergrips, there are no Lasergrips for my latest gun (HK P30) so the X400 could be just the ticket.

I was wondering about this as well.

And, which holster manufacturers are going to be releasing compatiable kit as well…?

The X400 that I ordered from Cabela’s website last weekend arrived via UPS this afternoon. This thing is very heavily built (what I expected). Method of attachment seems sturdier than X200/X300. It’s mounted on one of my G34s with a DG-11 contoured remote switch as well; will try to get to a range to fire some rds to verify sturdiness of mounting and general functioning this weekend.
