What type/kind of 22lr should I get?

Guys,

Because of the fine advice available here, I just bought a Spikes conversion kit.

Here’s the thing: I don’t know anything about that kind of ammo. Hell, I don’t even know what “lr” stands for.

What ammo do you fine gentlemen recommend?

Can’t help you with the ammo choices for that conversion since I use a different system, but LR = Long Rifle. This differentiates it from the other flavors of .22 rimfire cartriges, such as:

.22 Long
.22 Short
.22 BB
.22 CB

etc…

Here’s what Spikes recommend for their .22 uppers.

We test fire and tune all of the dedicated uppers in house with Federal bulk pack from Walmart but some of the dedicated uppers may require tuning for your setup or ammo, un-notched hammers also work best with them.

Since that’s also the cheapest stuff, I’d start there.

Yeah, I met a Spikes sales rep at a gun store yesterday and he said the same thing. Walmart has been all sold out so far. But I’ll keep looking.

I’ve got a kit, not Spike’s but basically the same thing, an it runs fine with everything I’ve put through it. Just buy a little of whatever you can find for a decent price and shoot the thing until the cheap bulk packs come around.

Stay away from Remington Goldens - they are too gummy to cycle reliably. They also have lots of duds per box.

My CMMG conversion runs great on Federal #750 Bulk Pack from Walmart, and out of 3,000 or so in various guns I have not had one FTFire because of a dud shell.

I agree. Bulk Remingtons in my experience are typically filthy dirty and you get lots of failures. If I was you I’d try a bunch of different types of ammo before buying a bulk-load of any one kind. 22’s can be real finicky and yours may feed/group way better with one kind of ammo over another. Just my .02.

I shoot about 1000 of both federal and remington a month, and have been doing so for a number of years until recently. I agree federals are cleaner and cheaper then remington golden bullet. They however are not as hot of a load as a remington if you shoot them back to back as i do for comparison. As for ftf, they both are about them same. most people that have a ftf try to shoot them a second time with success. Really common with rimfire cartridges. Funny thing with the federal in my 10/22, i get about 2 jams per 10 rounds. and the filthy remington’s shoot perfectly mag after mag. Seeing the ammo situation here in cali. I am buyin any .22lr i can get my hands on, cant even find any bulk packs anymore.

Congrats on the OPs Spikes conversion. Good choice.

I have been told the CCI Mini-mags also work well in the Spikes conversions.

You know, the Spikes sales rep said the same thing. I’m new to 22s …so I’m glad I’m asking around.

I’ve only shot CCI Mini-Mags and Federal bulk in my CMMG conversion, and it’s cycled 100%.

Winchester 333’s work also.

personally i do NOT like the Spikes, i see no difference in it than the Ciener , the bullet still has to “jump” quite a distance before it reaches the rifling.
the TacSol is my first choice, even over the new Colt M4 Carbine .22 Tactical Rimfire
which i bought yesterday !!

Our dedicated uppers have no jump. Most Conversions have a jump.

sorry sir for the misunderstanding, but from the photos posted there still looks as though the .223/5.56mm chamber thingy looks exactly like the Ciener conversion, if you would please, post a definition of it’s functionality or direct me to the site where i can become more informed of your system.

thank you

You’re looking at photos of the CONVERSION. You’re right, it has the same kind of chamber insert.

He’s talking about Spike’s DEDICATED UPPER, which can’t be used for .223/5.56 (it’s “dedicated” to .22lr), and doesn’t need a chamber insert. Hence, no “jump.”

aaaaaaaahh !! thank you sir, sometimes it takes a 2X4 to really get my attention, i will definitely check it out, i have lived with “conversions” of some sort or another for 20 or so years and now that the industry has finally caught up with what the customer has wanted for many years, everyone now is jumping on the .22LR band wagon, i am looking at buying 2 or 3 more of different Mfgrs., i like all steel barrels.
