In this order, loosely. Centurion and Diamondhead, for the slenderness and ergos. Noveske NSR, same reasons and I think is the lightest of the bunch, clever double-ended barrel nut giving you max ability to get perfect line-up of mounting holes for the rail. After that, the round Troy with the rail along the top.
I don’t like rails with ventilation holes so big that a finger can drop in.
Most rails including some of the above are not as loose-proof as they might be, using multiple screws that in some cases are coarse thread, pinch bolts, etc… being as how screws come loose. On the other hand I don’t have a better idea so Loctite time, works for me but if I were going to outfit a fleet with some of these there would be some staking and/or pinning and/or safety wiring involved.
I still haven’t moved up to MLOK or Keymod yet for any of my rifles because I’m worried it’s like the Bluray vs HDDVD war. Or do you guys think both will just coexist for the forseeable future?
No idea what the future holds. But with KAC, BCM, DD, Noveske and other top manufacturers adopting keymod, I was finally comfortable getting my first KM rail last year. For some reason, Geissele decided to only produce mlok when they debuted the Mk8 last fall. When I asked them why, the answer was simply that mlok was easier to produce. Most other rail manufacturers are making both. If Geissele were still making KM rails, I’d probably never use another rail.
The rifles in the safe are wearing Centurion C4 and BCM KMR handguards. There’s also a Mega MKM upper in the mail for an upcoming build. I’ve heard nothing but good things about them and am excited to try the rail and upper out.
I have held the Daniel Defense SLiM keymod rails and like them, as well as the CMR and the new MLOK rails by ALG and Geissele.
Just an opinion, but I think Keymod is going to be around with a few manufacturers who make their own stuff (BCM, Noveske), and Mlok is going to be around for awhile after the entire shooting community realizes it’s hands-down a better system.
Not in any particular order, BCM KMR, Centurion C4/CMR’s, Troy Viking Tactics original have served me well. The NSR and DD are probably as good as well as the Geissele and LaRue. Each probably has it’s strengths and weaknesses, Pros and Cons.
KAC URX 3.1 is my choice. Previously I ran some early Geissele rails but the Knights was more to my liking. The URX was more fitting to my hand and probably because it was on an SR15, as opposed to a home build, the Knights just shot better and balanced better than any of my other rifles.
I read through the entire “vs” thread last night, but I’m still not seeing it. Aside from use on plastics, all the other so-called “advantages” of mlok just seem sort of Meh to me.
While I love the weight of my KMR, I’m still not overly fond of the super slim profile. It just doesn’t feel “right” after so many years running quad rails. I’m sure it will grow on me over time though.
As slim as the KMR is, I was surprised to find out that a Saker suppressor would actually fit inside. A friend of mine built up his own version of a “honey badger” upper with a KMR. There was not enough room to mount accessories on the forward half of the rail though and I imagine that it would get very hot.
MI SSK, BCM KMR…I see no reason to switch as I have no issues with accesories. Keymod vs MLok debate is arbitrary. If I was an operator, DD RIS or Kac would be my choice.
I purchased my DD V5 during the panic, and really always wanted to get rid of the rail for something more modern, however, the 12inch quad rail is still light and comfortable, while I still might change my DD rail, it works, really well.
