So far, I’ve really only ran crappy russian ammo (Tula, Brown Bear) and Lake City M855 5.56 through my carbine. From what I understand, it’s good plinking/practice ammo, but for a real SHTF situation Hornady TAP 75 gr is one of the top choices. However, I got a bit of sticker shock from seeing how much it costs compared to what I’ve been buying.
I want the best and I’m willing to pay for it, but I wanted to see what you all have seen in terms of prices (or if I’m just looking in the wrong spots/websites). If the answer is that it is just expensive compared to what I’ve been running, then I accept that. Just want to make sure before I spend my money.
5.56 TAP goes for $27 for a box of 20…so if you can get it cheaper awesome. Obviously the more sought after ammo will warrant the higher sticker price.
Damn maybe I was confusing the price with my HST ammo…My mistake haha I buy from A2G as well. I wish they had a notification email system. Your right it’s been awhile since they’ve had some in stock.
I buy the majority of my T2 either local or at A2G…you gotta be ready to go with A2G and usually they won’t have it in stock more than 24hrs. after they post it. They usually get it in 4-5x a year.
G&R stocks it and usually has it avail. but its pricey…$29
I would be interested in the TAP 556 w/T2, but is that something I can get as a civy? I’m seeing some mention on various sites that it is limited to LE and Military. Can I assume TAP-FPD 223 is a good alternative if I cannot get the TAP 556?
Hornady TAP 5.56 was only available to LE distributors, Agencies, and Individual officers. Last time I checked Hornady stopped the sale to individual officers because they were turning around and selling it to companies and individuals to turn a profit. They tracked this by lot numbers, which is why some boxes had the lot numbers scratched off the box. You can still get it on various sites and its not a big deal. Again this is my understanding and it could have changed in the past two years.
There is a length thread between the differences on the 5.56 tap, .223 tap, and the 223 fpd tap.
Does Hornday offer it as a component? If they do it would be so much cheaper to load your own! Could be done for less then $.15 -20 per round! Way better then a $1 plus per! I know they load the 60 gr Vmax as part of there TAP line- thats available in component!
Mark, what would recommend for a good self defence load? I really struggle with this topic because it gripes my a$$ to pay that kind of money for an SD load. I have some mk 262 and TAP T2, but not much.
I severely doubt that you could load a TAP equivalent for .15-.20 / rd yourself. The bullet slug itself would probably come to close that if it were available separately.

Horn Match 75gr for 17.98 per hundred! So I can get TAP rounds for about $.28 per! Lets see thats $.28 per round VS $.92 per round factory, $.64 cheaper per round then buying factory! If you buy 600 count that drops to about $.26 per round!
Bullet by the 100-$.17
600-$.15
Brass-Free
Powder 7000gr 23.5 per load= $.08
Primers 1K $.03 per

And the the differenced being? What maybe a slightly thicker jacket?
I’ll bet money a BG will not know the difference! I seen the pictures of both annd they look exactly the same to me!
Do some research. There are good explanations here in M4C on the differences between the Hornady T2 and T1 and 75gr HPBT bullets. Since we were talking about recreating the TAP 556 ammo, you would need a source of T2 bullets to do so, as that is what it has. You can certainly load your own 75gr ammo, but it is not the same as the 556 TAP. And you may not be able to duplicate the performance of the 556 TAP either with normal powders, non cannelure bullets, etc.
And to really nitpick, your original claim of .15-.20 was off as you came up with .28 later on!
Yep seen the Dr’s ballistics on them and the Horn match did as good as the expensive T2/1! So as I said the BG isn’t going to know the difference and for $.64 less per round!
