I’m assuming you’re talking about the loaded chamber indicator feature on the extractor. That’s why it is there.
No, that’s the bump on the side. I’m talking about the dip on the top. You have to remove the extractor to really see it, although you can tell it’s there from the outside if you know what you’re looking for.
IIRC the dip started when glock started using MIM to manufacture the extractors. I would guess that the dip is somehow a necessity of the new manufacturing method or there for identification of the new parts. Someone that actually knows the answer can step in and confirm or tear apart my assumption.

It’s there to allow dirt and debris to escape.
I think its just there because of the molding process. I don’t feel it was done on purpose. The only function it does seem to do is brass to the face and/or erratic ejection.

It does cause brass to face and makes you order a real extractor from Apex.

The whole failure/weak ejection and brass to the face are the reasons I am hesitating from getting a 9mm Glock. My G23 ejects and throws the casings perfectly. As soon as they can get an extractor/ejector combo that has consistent performance with 115-147 grain, I’ll get a 9mm Glock.
You don’t hear about brass to face anymore…maybe they quietly fixed the problem.
Either way…an Apex extractor is a pretty easy fix if you DO get brass to face.
My 4 Vicker’s RTF 2 Glocks still send the brass with authority to my face…
