Welcome to the SR16

My first post…
Here are a few pics of the KAC SR16:

Notice enhanced bolt

Rounded lug bbl extension

Very Nice

Are these going to be available soon?

KAC told me at SHOT these would be on the shelves soon.

That was 3 months ago.

Haven’t heard shit since then.

I didn’t know the SR would garner any interest… I don’t know of any with high enough, verified, rd counts to comment on the efficacy of the KAC approach. But their rounded; bolt & barrel extension was meant for some SOCOM trial that never went.

You should also note the cam pin is of smaller diameter, allowing for a thicker bolt.

I’ve also seen some mid-length varients.

I left KAC as the first SR16’s were being shipped and can’t comment on how well they are doing in the field. I do remember extractor modifications and headspacing issues with the prototypes. I don’t know if you fellows remember, but Rock River beat the KAC SR16 for a DEA contract. Instead of KAC taking function tested M4’s, they took brand new untested SR’s that did not have feedramps cut in them yet. And as such, the SR16 had failure to feed problems with one or several different types of ammo required by DEA. At least, that is how I remember it, but my memory is pretty bad even on a good day.
I believe the E3 version seen above was for the Marine Corps.

Besides the modified cam pin that Dano5326 pointed out, also notice the differences between a standard firing pin and the SR16 firing pin.

Nice pics, thanks for sharing… When oh when will the civy SR15’s be availble for purchase…

altav,
Glad to share the pics, thought they may be of interest to the members here…

I wouldn’t hold yer’ breath on too many SR15’s or SR25’s coming out of KAC now for civi’s since they are buried in Govt. contracts. FYI, the SR15’s sold out of Vero were assembled by LMT. All we did was put a RAS on them, install the 2 stage trigger and cut the feedramps. Most of the AR15 type parts we used during that time frame came from LMT. I have no idea who supplies them now.

Found pics of the SR16 Gas Block/BUIS versions.

Nice first post.

Did you ever have the chance to fire the SR16? If so, what was your impression?

>Did you ever have the chance to fire the SR16? If so, what was your impression?

R,
Yes, I fired the SR16 several times. My impression was similar to any other full-auto M4. I encountered no feeding problems with the ones I handled. We fired green tip thru them from de-linked SAW ammo. We’d pull the tracer off the belts, load up mags full of the GrTip and shoot that stuff up.
The protective ears on the front sight are thicker and angled slightly different than standard AR’s but are easy to get used to. The front site has a switch to lock it in the up or down position. Some were equipped with Trijicon front site posts. A KAC suppressor could easily be attached to it. They were surprisingly more accurate than other M4’s I’ve fired on semi-auto. I’m sure the 2 stage FA trigger contributed to that. If I remember correctly the rate of FA fire was well over 700rpm.
My duties at KAC were with SR-25 and trigger assembly . My only part with the SR-16 was installing the FA trigger and auto-sear. Testing the triggers was what brought me to do range time with them. The FA trigger disconnector spring would “set” after many FA rounds and the trigger would lose first stage and need to be re-tuned in. The only fix at the time (other than get better springs) was to increase the sear to hammer engagement should the spring “set” in.

Very interesting.

damn, I wish i could see these pics!
