Vortex Viper PST Torque Specs (Rings)

Thought I’d pass this on to those who use torque specs when mounting scopes.

ME: I recently ordered a Vortex Viper PST 1-4x24 and ADM Recon mount from OpticsPlanet. I had found conflicting values for the scope hold-down screws. I contacted ADM and they suggested 20-25 inch pounds. However, they told me that it’s best to contact the scope manufacturer due to different housing thicknesses, etc. What do you recommend?

Thank you

Vortex Rep: Thank you for contacting Vortex Optics. Congratulations on your new Viper PST 1-4x24 scope! We recommend using 15-18 in/lbs for ring to scope. If you exceed this, you risk damaging the internal erector tube on your scope. Thank you for the inquiry! Thank you for choosing Vortex!!

Word of caution with the ADM mount:

I used blue loctite on the mount when I had a PST. When I went to remove it, the threads were galled, and the mount was useless.

I’d highly recommend using Bobro mounts. I had no issues with the Bobro mounts on three different optics, and one was still fine after using red loctite.

I’ve had several ADM mounts, with only the one failure, but I won’t be using ADM anymore.

YMMV

Warranty?

Not sure what’s ADM’s warranty is, but the mount went in the trash can.

I’ve had other mounts of theirs that worked just fine and didn’t get stripped out from blue loctite use.

That said, I’m a strong believer that Bobro is worth the extra cash. YMMV

Bobro is a step above ADM by most accounts. However, I bet ADM would’ve replaced the mount for free. Oh well.

I remember bobro recommending purple (low strength) locktite for my scope mount and not much torque for the rings. It came with a special hex wrench that was a short L so you could not horse on it much. Never had a problem with it I would definitely recommend it.
ETA loctite 222MS

I don’t understand how blue Loctite could be galling threads on a scope mount?

I also don’t think I would be using red Loctite on any scope mount bolts.

The mount is fine. The screws now come coated in a white colored threadlocker. They previously included Vibra-Tite VC-3. No idea what the white version is.ADM states they “may” void the warranty if other threadlockers are used. My screws were heavily coated making it difficult to run the screws in. I cleaned them enough where I felt I could get an accurate torque reading. This is from 2014 from ADM and I don’t know if it still applies: “Use only the supplied Vibra-Tite Threadlocker. DO NOT use Loctite on any ADM Mounts. Doing so will damage the threads and void the warranty.”

Sorry I was referring to Outlander Systems’s post.

That’s cool. At my age, there’s no telling what I’ll reply too.
