Varget Cost: What's Realistic?

I’m working on picking up components to start .308 load development. Thanks for the excellent feedback to my previous questions. As to Varget powder: the only local source that has it wants $40 per pound. Most places, it’s not available. Looking around the web, it’s pretty pricey anywhere that has it and then you have the hazmat shipping fee. Is $40 per pound simply the new reality for this powder? Is this a robbery price that I should run away from? Is it steep but not out of line for a place that actually has it? I can work with other recipes while waiting for the price to come down, but what does the M4C crystal ball lead you to believe?

I wouldn’t pay any more than ~$30/lb locally. If you can wait and put yourself on email notifications, then you can find it for normal prices + hazmat fee. Keep you eye on Widener’s, Grafs, PowderValley, etc. and it will show up eventually. You better be ready to buy immediately, it will sell out in minutes (as do most other powders).

i bought a lb (only bottle they had) at cabelas for about $30 to try it. Ive had heard about varget since i started reloading a few years ago, but that was THE first time i had ever seen a bottle for sale.

Its really thought to find, but I’ve had similar if not better results for 308 using IMR 4064, which seems easier to find.

I’d find a new place to shop. I’m in Alaska and it’s less than $30 a lb.

Last time I bought it at my local Cabelas I paid less than $30 with tax, and Cabelas doesn’t have good prices on jack shit most of the time. For $40 I would tell them to shove it and go elsewhere.

ETA: I bought this around 2 weeks ago. Just as a time frame note.

The price of Varget has skyrocketed in my area. The 1 pound container I bought in October 2014 was $26. I’ll bet it’s $30 when the local shop gets it back in stock.

$30 !!! Jeez, that’s £20 in uk money, I wish. It’s £53 here, that’s about $80 to you guys

Pete

The last time I bought Varget, it was about $28 a pound.

That was about 6 months ago.

It’s between $27 and $30 a pound in my area when you can find it.

i’m in middle TN and i saw cases of it on shelves at two different local gun stores. about $28/lb which i consider obscenely high. neither place ships afaik

You have socialism to blame for that price.

I pay around $25 depending on the source. You have options other than Varget for that round. I4895 and I4064 work just as well, if not better, than Varget for 762 loading.

$28 a pound for two pounds at Cabelas two weeks ago. Reasonable when you figure the cost of hazmat and shipping.

I think that is what I ended up paying for mine at my Cabelas. For a single pound for me to try I felt it was worth it. Just starting to get into reloading myself so there is that, and to get a single pound to try before trying for the 8 pound kegs. Did the same and grabbed a pound of Unique to try some .45, .38, and 9mm loads with since pistol powder had been scarce up here.

Not to hijack the thread, but why is it so damned hard to find varget? I have 5lbs I bought back in '10 for my 308. Looked the other day cant find a jug anywhere.

It’s nearly impossible to find a “what powder should I use for 5.56/.308” thread on this or any other forum where varget is not one of the first powders recommended in the first few posts. Everyone seems to love it.

I’ve only ad limited exposure to it, partly because of availability issues, but with me loading for a 308 bolt gun and my SBR in 223, I’ve seen that it’s a powder that works well for both cartridges. My 308 likes 4064 or n150 better, and my AR likes h335 or TAC better, but varget is the powder that is the best compromise for both.

Because fukking dumb asses are using it for all kinds of shit like shooting 55 gr bullets because other dumb asses told them it’s a great powder for .223.

If people shot the right powder for the ammo they were making… Varget would be all over the place. It’s just one of those reloading dogma nightmares.

About $35 out the door locally. I recently picked up some 4064 to try so i can work up a load for the times I can’t find Varget. Local store guy here mentioned that he thinks they only make a couple of runs a year so buy it when you see it. Based on how fast it sells, it’s not like it was some BS salesman line to sell more. Or at least that’s how it seemed. Slight derail but Titegroup is the other powder that is never around long locally.

The local store in Northern Utah has it for $26-27/lb, but I think $30 is pretty common. I wouldn’t pay more that $35 unless I was very desperate to get some.

Pah. Its the equivalent of $75us over here in the uk. Total rip off
