It is sleek, mighty and gleaming silver as a Manhattan dawn. But this is a warship with real inner mettle. When the USS New York is christened today in Louisiana with a splash of champagne and a hearty cheer, few will overlook its motto:
“Never forget.”…
A correction:
The picture I posted above was of The U.S.S. San Antonio - Hull #17 The New York Is Hull #21 below. They are virtually identical as they are sister ships. The Navy is commissioning two other sister ships to the New York, named Arlington (LPD-24) and Somerset (LPD-25) to likewise commemorate the other two attacks at Arlington, Virginia and Somerset, Pennsylvania. When all three are at sea, I’m certain there will be photos taken of them in formation.
It’s got the payload to whoop some ass as well. Holds three hundred and some sailors and 700 marines that can be fast inserted via helicopter or various assault craft.
Not likely as they’ll be homeported on different coasts, countries(?) (maybe one in Sasebo?). The first ship in the class new LPD-17 class is the SAN ANTONIO. The rest of them will be SAN ANTONIO class ships.
