trunnion question

What exactly is a trunnion and what exactly is its purpose? Ive searched this site and Ive googled it. I saw pictures of a few that look like they become kind of a bulk-head (if you will) once inside the weapon, but for what?

I also find pics of mounted shop machinery also refering to a trunnionā€¦ Im confused.

If its possible pictures always help me understand :smiley:

Cool, thanx. Trunnions are such a large part of alot of thing and I never really knew how to refer to those particular parts.

Kind of an epiphanous moment for me. I guess I feel a little like a jack-ass :smiley: :smiley:
