I hope this is the right forum to put this question. I have a semi auto 1927a1 auto ordinance Tommy Gun.
If I remove the shoulder stock (Over all length is 30" / barrel is 16" and it has a vertical foregrip) Is it LEGALLY considered
AOW or just a stockless rifle?

Not sure, that’s a tricky one.
I’m not sure either but my gut reaction would be that ATF would consider it a AOW…but that there wouldn’t be any issues with a horizontal forend.
ETA: It’s either going to be a SBR or an AOW, but either way requires a $200 making tax via a Form 1.
The AO T1B with detachable buttstock is ok, the overall length is 31.5 inches with the butt removed.

IF the stock was removed it would be 30" overall length with a 16" barrel.
the only issue is the Vertical foregrip…But even without a stock it is “technically” still a rifle…Correct?
If so, it should be fine. I think it would be. As long as the OAL exceeds the 26" minimum it is legit as a rifle , shoulder stock or not.
So a vertical foregrip should be a non issue.
Think about it this way. Add a vertical grip to your AR15 carbine quad rail, then take your 6 position stock and slide it off the buffer tube. Did you make it into a SBR or AOW?

with a 16" barrel no its not an SBR.
a pistol with a vetical foregrip is AOW.
A rifle without a shoulder stock is still a rifle if it is longer than 26" OAL and has a 16" barrel.

THE ATF NEVER INCLUDED THE THOMPSON PISTOL
WITH A FRONT GRIP AN AOW THIS WAS ONE THE EXCEPTIONS TO THE RULE.
AUTO ORDNANCE (THOMPSON) MADE THE PISTOL FOR YEARS AND IT COULD BOUGHT RIGHT OVER THE COUNTER…

well it is a rifle with 16" barrel so I cant shorten the barrel but the stock will come off…laser sight from the hip.
If hip firing a Tommy Gun was good enough for the Mafia …
As I understand it, any recognized long gun would only require the $200 stamp if the OAL, with or without a stock was less than 26-inches (I think) OR the barrel is less than 16-inches.
A handgun, on the other hand, requires the tax if you either add a vertical foregrip or a stock without dropping in a 16-inch barrel and meeting the minimum OAL of 16-inches.
I could be wrong though.
