Thoughts on "Generation Kill"?

Semper Fi Brother.
Tipy

Hey Tipy, forgive me for asking but if the show was such liberal BS, wouldn’t it be fair to say that some of the other folks in Recon who were there wouldn’t have been willing to be a part of it’s production? Much less to actually play themselves?

That just doesn’t seem reasonable or plausible.

You are forgetting that money is involved. That makes anything possible.

+1000…

I was attached to 1 MEF in 2003 at Camp Commando before the war kicked off…overall, war and Marines are dirty…the images you see on TV have been vetted/approved for release. Only those who have been there (I have) can tell you there is truth in this mini-series (some literary license was taken)…

If you felt offended after watching the film…or had some sort of ethical dilemma as to behaviors portrayed in the film…so what. You weren’t there…and didn’t have to deal with the crap they put up with: lack of food, water, ammo, supplies, bad/stupid decisions, leadership, etc…

I was a Marine 03 from 95-2004. I served with and knew personally many of the Marines in the book. I own the book. I do not think it was a liberal smear of any sorts; in fact the author writes with respect about the good Marines he was there with.

The guy who played Godfather was on last week’s episode of Fringe. He has a real voice!

Hell, I’d heard that he developed throat cancer after the invasion.

I’m not sure which one, but one of the COs from the book is now one of my brother’s COs at TBS. Really hoping its not Captain America.

I read Nate Fick’s “One Bullet Away” first since I figured it would be the most accurate. Then watched the series, now I’m about a 1/4 of the way through the book. The series and so far the book have been extremely entertaining.

“Godfather” did actually sound like that, he had throat cancer well before OIF I.

1st Recon was in Camp Matilda next to my Battalion before going north and after we returned south and I know several of the SNCOs and Officers that were in the Battalion for OIF I.

Honestly, I think it is a somewhat accurate presentation of what occurred, but most don’t understand that is just the way junior Marines act. There is just a degree of immaturity that get with any 18-22 whether they are in the military or not, they often say stupid, crass things.

My room mate was at jump school with Garza, he had no complaints about it.

Also several of the real deal guys helped out on the show and even played themselves. Fruity Rudy, yeah thats the real guy.

My experiences with Marines points that Generation kill is pretty spot on.

Shit, not just Marines, when I was 11B, us Army guys acted like retards every once in a while too:D

And there are some fucked up NCO’s and Officers in the military and the combat arms has their share of them. Thankfully most are like Iceman and not like Capt. America. We had one of those:mad:

I thought it portrayed infantry soldiers pretty acurately. Crazy Motherfuckers doing a crazy job nobody else could do.

Just finished the series. What I got out of it:

[ul]
[li]The Marines are often be under-equipped and make do with what they have.
[/li][li]The white man is evil and gets whatever it wants.
[/li][li]The Marines have incompetent officers who fabricate situations and waste ordnance in order to win medals.
[/li][li]The Marines blow up women and children in their villages.
[/li][li]They accidentally skip 40mm smoke grenades off the ground into the back of innocent people’s heads, killing them.
[/li][li]The Marines blow up schools.
[/li][li]The Marines created a lot of the opposition just by being there
[/li][li]The Marine reservists are undisciplined cowboys who kill with no discretion, often with excessive force.
[/li][li]The Marines didn’t liberate anyone.
[/li][li]There was no WMDs since they were allowed to take off their MOPP suits, negating the purpose of the war.
[/li][li]Finally, the war seemed justified in the infant stage and as it progressed seemed less and less and only people with a brain realized it.
[/li][/ul]

Kind of left a bitter taste in my mouth. I dont know what to think.

Ive got the DVD, the bonus features has a round table w brad colbert, rudy, garza the other gunny(not the company gunz) and some others. They liked it for the most part, but said the officer bashing was a little much.

I have’nt seen it yet but I would like to.

Too bad you didn’t get it is Marines with a capital M.

Im sorry. Wasn’t trying to slight them.

agreed

While i was not in Iraq in 03, I can say for sure that marines pretty much act the way they were portrayed in both film and text.
For a little different view on the same story read “One Bullet Away” by LT. fick.

Tipy- thank you for your service and sacrifice but that was 40 years ago the corps has changed probably for the worse in some ways.

Always have been and always will, and will continue to thrive that way. Ooh Rah
