“The great sorting is the way forward. There is no national cultural consensus. In fact, the moral visions of red [state] and blue [state] America are now diametric opposites that cannot coexist. Permanent Washington is so thoroughly corrupt and broken that no one, not even a capable leader like Ron DeSantis, will likely be able to repair it. Many have discussed the possibility of national divorce, which I think is unlikely in the near future, but the great sorting can happen now and is happening now
The left has made it impossible for red America to exist in blue states for decades. It is simply time to return the favor. Make red states redder. Create an environment where people once again recognize the necessity of living next to family and community that share their values.”
I don’t disagree with the notion, and it is FAR more palatable than a “national divorce”. That said, whether the greedy-ass Libtards “allow” it remains to be seen. I think a national sorting is indeed the way to make things function better going forward, and as such we all get to live in an environment that we’re comfortable with. Almost a (dare I say the word) confederation of states as the Founders envisioned under rather loose Federal oversight. You don’t like guns? Fine, live where they are heavily regulated. Like the LGBTQXYZ lifestyle? No problemo, live where sodomy and the freak lifestyles reign! Then the rest of us can peacefully co-exist while living in like-minded areas which are probably the antithesis of yours.
The problem lies in that “loose” Federal control, which is anything but that. I have always felt that liberalism (I won’t flatter them by calling it “Progressive”) requires forced mandatory participation. I don’t like guns, therefore YOU can’t have any either. I revel in the freak lifestyle, and you cannot simply roll your eyes and accept it, no you too must rejoice in it. I welcome the invasion of illegals, and so must you. “Our” side just basically wants to be left alone, live and let live; “their” side wants to ram their agenda down your throat whether you like it or not. Therein lies the problem, and I have to say that a “national sorting” is much cleaner than a national divorce…but I’ll be damned if the Left won’t have it that way, all or nothing. Bastards.
Does this mean if I want to own guns I have to start going to church?
Let’s not pretend it’s only one side that wages war on individual freedom. How about we just start fighting statism in all it’s forms and work in limiting government and their ability to infringe upon anyone? I’d rather do that than form team states and have nationwide crips n bloods.
No, its not the left versus evangelicals. Being conservative means wanting a smaller government and a government that puts individual rights above all else. Some of us choose to be spiritual but its not a requirement
I 100% agree with you that both side wish to infringe on individual rights.
Things started getting really sketchy when the leadership of the FBI doesn’t go to a guy who served 30 years in the FBI, but it does go to a guy who was an Attorney somewhere who get politically appointed to such a position.
We let the FBI, DOJ, EPA and ATF get too big to fail, we allowed political appointees to build little Fifedoms and begin to legislate. It is amazing to me that the House has caught on to this and is a bit upset, yet, the Senate seems oblivious.
I know they have the Senate and the Presidency, but the House and the SCOTUS seem firmly in the grasp of reality. That kind of locks things up nicely.
I am however concerned that this will lead to Biden adding about 6 more Members to the SCOTUS, the only pressure we have to disuade that is that he is being Impeached.
Not everyone agrees. Even under Reagan we had the “moral majority” driving policy.
Ironically the kind of libertarian / conservative you are describing has the least representation in government because by definition it means “less government, less revenue and less power” and almost nobody actually in office wants any of that. Anyone who seeks office to actually makes such corrections will quickly become marginalized by the power brokers in office who are there to gain more power, wealth and control.
It’s a wicked catch 22 where the people who want to be in office are typically the worst possible candidates for office. Add to the fact that politicians promote and measure their success by the laws they pass and you have very few who aren’t willing to pass any kind of nonsense just to show how productive they are.
Yet it was our side who brought ATF under to DOJ as part of the Homeland Security Act of 2002 and passed the Patriot Act after 9-11 which gave the FBI broader powers to violate the rights of even US citizens by simply declaring them “terrorists” or “suspected terrorists.” I still remember the legions of “patriots” on TOS who argued all day long that such things would never actually be used against law abiding US citizens.
Bush had the whole damn store for 8 years and accomplished almost nothing. His two big issues seemed to be “define marriage” and “fix Iraq” and he failed miserably. Despite concerns about “the gays”, it was actually Sen. Larry Craig (who I’m pretty sure is gay) who saved us from the renewal of the assault weapon ban after a Republican majority congress successfully amended it to one of his industry protection bills and he deep sixed it rather than let it move forward.
So forgive me for being skeptical of the GOP going back decades now, they worked hard to get us where we are now.
Yes we had our Bush moments and Reagan moments too.
It’s beyond me why either one of these guys, who started off with the best of intentions, both ended up like they did. They could have made real progress, but one when cornered felt he had to attack somebody and the other gets mixed up in a scheme that has weapons and cocaine and sending Bibles to Heathens.
Nobody wanted or needed all of that, really, just act like Ike and build some Interstate Highways and Infrastructure and enjoy Peace.
Leave people alone and pump oil and build stuff, just untie the hands and turn them loose.
No instead we get crap like Ukraine and while we’re dancing on the edge of Russia using a nuke, the Pentgon “finds” 5 Billion in cash laying around.
The “Moral Majority” spin the Republicans used to put on it is rather dated…30+ years ago. Don’t hear much about that these days, especially as a “selling point” of the Right. It seems to be more about rejecting government intrusion into one’s life.
And yes, that is probably best defined by, as you mention, statism, albeit slanted to one side.
Republicans had Congress two full years to work with Trump to undo the damage Obama did. They should’ve had a stack of bills a foot thick lined up for 2017 but here we are.
