Tech Guys- How do I connect my laptop to my TV to watch movies?

The title pretty much says is it all. If I have an HDMI output could that work?

Thanks

yes i didn’t read it the first time but yes. if you want to watch tv you need a tv tuner box http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=tv+tuner+box&x=0&y=0

My HDTV’s have standard RGB inputs just like a monitor. We hooked up my wife’s iBook once and it works fine. Only problem is the iBook has a 1024x768 display and it does not support 1920x1080. The HDTV scaled the image to the screen size, but the text wasn’t as sharp. If your laptop supports 1920x1080 over HDMI then you should be fine.

redsox20-I have movies stored on my hardrive and I want to be able to watch them on my TV. Will that box allow me to do this?

As Left Sig posted, 1920x1080 is the resolution for 1080p. The video card you have in your computer will determine what you can output.

What kind of computer? What video card?

The only reason for a tuner is to watch over the air digital TV.

I have a Toshiba and I think the video card is a Mobile Intel (R) 965 if that sounds right.

I have a Toshiba 40" 1080p tv with a 15 pin connection on the back. I have used a regular monitor cable to connect my laptop to it. When the computer detects the display, it doesn’t know what resolution it is capable of. If you know that your tv is 1080p, you can go into the video config on the computer and tell it to show you modes that are unsupported - there should be a 1920x1080 60hz option that will work. If your laptop has HDMI then it should be as simple as just hooking up the cable and letting the computer realize what it is talking to.

The Intel 965 is a good integrated video solution:
Enhanced high definition experience with improved HDTV connectivity & HDMI supporting up to 1080p and easy to use TV configuration utility, Intel® TV Wizard. Enhanced HW acceleration for MPEG2 and WMV9B formats.

If you get the latest drivers you will get the TV Wizard (TVWsetup.exe). When plugged in to your TV the wizard should auto-detect and configure your settings.

BTW there are better DVD player software programs than Windows Media Player. However WMP is free.

I have seen some of the wireless setups that go onto the TV. Are those any good?

Like a SlingBox?

No. SlingBox lets you watch from different locations using different devices.

I am talking about instead of connecting my lap top to the TV set via cables using a wireless adapter that installs on the TV.

Ah. When you wrote “wireless setup” I was not sure what that was. Wireless is always a compromise. There is not enough bandwidth so something has to give (quality?). There is also the whole FCC Class B must not cause but must accept interference that in my opinion makes wireless less than ideal.

Also any type of adapter typically does some sort of DA conversion. Depending on the chip used and the algorithm used to calculate the down-sampling you can quickly get smearing, artifacts, whatever and find a diminished user experience.

Stick with HDMI and get some shielded cables, something better than what came in the box but no need to spend big bucks unless you are really into that sort of thing.

I got it.

I got a VGA cable since both my computer and my tv had the connections for it and it is working great. I also had a audio cable lying around for my ipod so…Its all hooked up now. Thanks guys
