I am getting ready to take advantage of the new no tax stamp era. I am set on the Surefire ecosystem. I am debating between the SOCOM 762 RC2 and the SOCOM 762 Mini. These will be used on a 20” AR10 7.62 platform, a 14.5 AR15 in 5.56 and a 16” 300 BLK. From my research, the 762 Mini is roughly the same size as the SOCOM 556 RC2. My question is this: Does the extra 1.8 inches make a huge difference in sound suppression? The Mini would basically put my 14.5 at 20.7 “
My AR10 is basically a hunting/ long range gun. My 16” BLK is basically a hunting rifle as well. Most of the hunting in my area is 200 yards and in. I don’t mind the extra length while sitting in a deer stand, but the RC2 would put my 14.5 AR15 home defense rifle at 22.9 inches. Which seems a bit unwieldy.
I would love your opinion on this, as most of you have significantly more experience with suppressors that I do. Thank you for any assistance.
2 years must be the “come back to M4” cycle. A few members have popped up in that time frame lately.
My tangential experience with a small 30 cal can is on my 308 rem 700 20”. My YHM R9 direct thread is rated for some 308 and 5.56 use. I put the mini-ish can on my 308 and it was LOUD. Far from hearing safe for the shooter, but made it ok for the other guys behind the shooter.
SF cans may have more baffle though. I think mine has 5.
My take on hunting cans is I don’t remove them from the host unless I plan on doing a full re-sight in with the rifle every time. Unless you’re 100% convinced there is no POI shift, it’s not worth risking missing that nice 6x6 downrange because your POI shifted up and right a half MOA, which at 350 yards, might put you just outside the kill zone and lead to a multi-hour chase or worse.
We direct thread a handful of cans onto bolt guns every weekend. POI shift hadn’t really been considered or experienced. There’s an FN 308 bolt gun and a Bergara 6.5cm bolt gun that are transported with thread protectors and canned up on site.
Not hunting guns, but the idea is the same since they’re long range shooters out to 1300 yards.
The mini would most likely be 4-5db louder than the RC2. That’s going to be noticeable for sure. Not an “end of the world” difference though. Besides, you don’t really go Surefire if you are looking for the lowest db numbers. Don’t get me wrong, they are great cans, they just ain’t the quietest.
Me personally I’ll give up some db for a shorter length in most scenarios. On shorties I mostly just care about taking the edge off. I hate putting length back on and I want a short can. Doesn’t matter as much on long guns, especially in stationary shooting. You do have to get the rifle up into the stand, but i doubt 2 inches is gonna make or break that one way or the other.
I haven’t noticed any significant POI shift putting a full size 3D printed titanium suppressor on my Accuracy International AT-X. The can is 8.55”X1.75” so definitely full size, and it mounts to a host muzzle device that is made of steel. Weight is right at 14oz, add another couple ounces for a ColeTac thermal cover.
This is on a 24” barrel that is slightly heavier contour than an MTU so it’s probably considerably stiffer than a sporter weight barrel of the same length.
I would post video of it suppressing 6.5 Creedmoor but the file is too large.
I only get to do one or two hunts a year. Once meat in in the freezer I’m done. I’m chasing sausage on the hoof and not too concerned with what I can mount on the wall. This will be my first can, and I would like something that can be used with multiple rifles until I can outfit the rest.
I’m not a door kicker or a pipe hitter, and don’t pretend to be. I visit this forum to try to pick up knowledge and learn from people who have way more experience that I do. I would like a robust can that will be a solid investment for my needs.
