I’m considering doing a 12.5" SBR build sometime in the somewhat near future. I really like my 12" ALG EMR v3 that I have on my 16" rifle and would like to keep it at that length for the SBR if at all possible. I’m also looking at the Silencerco SpecWar for a suppressor.
Does anyone have a set up like this? Will the .5" of barrel past the handguard give enough clearance to attach a suppressor to the muzzle device? Or should I just go and get the 10" model EMR?
It’s debatable. PWS uses a 12 3/4 inch barrel on their Mk112 model that features a 12 inch handguard which clears everything I’ve mounted for customers, save for some of AAC’S old muzzle devices that overlapped the muzzle. The main thing I’d be worried about obviously is being able to easily rotate the locking collar.
Remember that the barrel and handguard are measured from two different locations. The handguard is measured from the end to the interface with the upper receiver. Barrels are measured from the crown to the bolt face (when locked in the extension). Plus you’ll lose at least a half inch of length due to the threading. Comparing barrel length and handguard length aren’t quite apples to apples.
To direction answer your question: it MIGHT work. I had a 12" DD MFR rail and the only issue I had installing a flash hider was that the wrench flats sat just inside the handguard, making installation a little bit of a pain. You’re likely going to have to mock up the upper and see where everything lines up. If you’re willing to do so, you could probably remove an eighth to a quarter inch of material from the end of the handguard and fix any interferences.
It’s going to be really close, and the only way anyone can tell you with certainty is if they have the exact same setup (suppressor, muzzle device, barrel, and handguard)
When you start getting things that close, little things like how much the suppressor overhands the muzzle device (0.10") and how accurate their 12" handguard is (12.2") and all of a sudden your suppressor won’t full screw on the mount
I have 3 12.5" barreled uppers and all have 11" rails of different kinds. I have AAC cans on all. Some 11" rails are a tight fit but work without a problem. I will not go over 11" for a rail on a 12.5 barrel.
Tigershilone beat me to it. I have an 11.5 with an 11in troy and a saker and i also had to open the rail up a little. The difference is between these and what you want to do is we used the saker and you want the specwar which uses a locking collar, so if you rail runs long at all you are not just going to be able to tuck it inside the rail.
