I’m mulling over getting a suppressor for one of my handguns but I wanted to know if there’s any advantage to suppressing a 9mm over a .45 or vice versa.
.45 is already sub sonic so that’s a plus for the .45

Yep, nearly all 45ACP ammo is subsonic. You have to specifically load or buy sub sonic 9mm. Most 45 ACP cans work well with 9mm as well so you can cover both with one suppressor, assuming it has a piston for each caliber. My SWR Octane45 HD does and works very well with both calibers.
I initially went with 45 because of the subsonic factor, but 9mm is quieter with subs ref smaller hole. I have both Octane 45 and 9. While the 9 can is slightly smaller, I would buy the 45 can with 9mm end cap if I could do it again. I bought the 45 can first and got a good deal on the 9. If this is your first can, buy a 22 or rifle can first.
Perhaps a best of both worlds?
Take a look at the Griffin Revolution 45. Along with being a typical sized 45 can, it can be configured in a K size that is a little smaller than most full size 9 cans. I believe Griffin is going to be offering 9 caps for it as well.
Shooting 45? Full size config.

I like shooting both. 147 grn subsonic or 158 grn subsonic are not that hard to find and aren’t horribly expensive for 9mm.
147gr 9mm ammo is cheap to buy and easy to make if you reload.
It’s less expensive than .45, and most of the time folks shoot the majority of their rounds on a public range where hearing protection is required - meaning you can train with even cheaper supersonic 9mm.
Go 9mm and don’t look back.
If you’re like me and shoot worlds more 9mm than .45, get the 9mm can, it will be substantially quieter. 147gr. is widely available and cheaper than than .45ACP and 158gr. is STUPID quiet!
I went with the nine because it’s generally quieter and will make my G19 a better HD gun. I chose the Griffin Revolution 9 for it’s changeable length feature. Short inside house and full length at the range. Currently in jail.
Since my Government 1911s are the only handgun I really love to shoot as is, I don’t care to wreck the balance with a can. Glocks are just F-150 dependable, utility machines to me. Maybe the tube will add some fun factor.
I’m not sure this is a valid argument anymore, since there are a number of excellent 147 gr. 9mm loads available now (Federal HST comes to mind). However, I do agree if you’re on the fence, the “One-Can-To-Suppress-Them-All” approach might be the best way to go.
I absolutely love my .45 but for my HD gun I use a suppressed Beretta 92A1 with a AAC can.
The ammo is much cheaper for the 9mm and it is whisper quiet when fired with subsonic ammo which is anything over 147gr.
