I did a search and didn’t see this topic addressed directly, so I here we go:
What are the real-world pros & cons of Aluminum and Steel barrel nuts? I often see the material the nut is made of in ads or spec sheets for various rail systems, but I’ve never heard why one might be better than the other, except that the regular, USGI nut is steel.
Weight is an obvious difference, but the aluminum ones are necessarily larger, so the end result isn’t huge.
It was explained to me a while ago that due to expansion rates, the original design of a steel barrel/aluminum receiver/steel barrel nut was best for accuracy.
I would probably get it wrong if I tried to expand on that point.
aluminum is lighter and sinks heat better… it’s also aluminum on aluminum- so no risk of galvanic corrosion.
the only drawback i can see is that aluminum is softer than steel… two aluminum threads cinched together probably possess greater potential for deforming and eventually loosening up. no idea how much you’d have to shoot, but i imagine the tighter you get those threads on there the better.
i think i’d probably always prefer aluminum… and i’m sure the only reason you won’t find alum GI nuts it because of their design… if you made one out of alum, the teeth would round off as soon as you started tightening.
i can only think of a couple after-market handguards that use steel nuts… alum is the way of the future.
For those of you that like shooting longer distances, do you have a preference to steel or alum barrel nuts?
I’m doing a Grendel upper build and noticed that WOA sells their own “pinch” rail and it uses a steel barrel nut. WOA must think steel > alum right ?
I’m also looking into rails from alg (VO-E) and Larue (LAT)
I don’t plan to mount anything on the rail. I just want a rail and nut that won’t hurt accuracy.
FWIW
The upper will be for fun use - for hunting and at the range.
Parts I have so far:
Bcm blem stripped upper
Faxon 20” fluted heavy barrel (I know… I should have gotten a 16” but I knew the seller and it wasn’t selling so…)
