SNAP and Fraud Waste and Abuse

I don’t begrudge anyone who needs it from getting it, but I’m buying Coca-Cola for other People when I don’t buy it for myself because it’s trash, but my tax dollars go to pay for it for those on benefits is just wrong.

Subcommittee on Delivering on Government Efficiency Chairman Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) today announced a hearing titled “Combating Waste, Fraud, and Abuse in SNAP.” The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) has repeatedly identified vulnerabilities in the administration of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) that make the program susceptible to fraud and improper payments. During the hearing, members will examine the root causes of waste, fraud, and abuse within SNAP.

A federal judge has blocked a Trump administration-backed effort to prevent recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) from using benefits to buy soda and other sugary products, a move that could affect millions of Americans nationwide.

In a 68-page decision, U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson found that Congress “did not authorize the [U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)] to amend or waive” Congress’s definition of eligible food under the Food and Nutrition Act, adding that the department could not “cut types of food out of SNAP entirely.”

Should SNAP Benefits be used to buy Soda?

An entire understanding of the word Supplemntal is lost on them, we are adding to the money you are putting in your grocery budget, so your money, plus our money =’s your Grocery Budhet.

You can’t buy Cokes on our Dime, but if you want to buy cokes with your own money….

I also firmly believe that SNAP Benefits drive Grocery prices higher for People not on the program.

If 40MM people are getting a finite commodity for free, prices will go up for sure.

A new report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture found over $13 million in likely Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program fraud in Ohio.

USDA Inspector General John Walk announced the inspection report by the Office of Inspector General (OIG) identifying $13.3 million in potential SNAP fraud in Ohio.

OIG based its analysis on data provided by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) which administers federal food assistance to Ohioans in need.

The Trump administration and Ohio officials have launched a crackdown on “blatant” food stamp benefit fraud, accusing 19 retailers across the state of illegally exchanging SNAP benefits for cash, alcohol, tobacco and other prohibited items.

Among the 19 retailers, according to the USDA, there are a Cleveland convenience store trafficking more than $14,000 in SNAP benefits; a Columbus retailer exchanging more than $800 in benefits for $300 in cash and trading SNAP benefits for a glass bong and bottles of wine; and a Columbus retailer accepting SNAP benefits for beer.

Republican Rep. Brandon Gill (TX-26) had a sparring exchange with a SNAP policy advocate that is getting a lot of attention. Gill probed whether she thought Americans “need Coca-Cola to survive.”

“Should SNAP dollars be spent on soda?” Gill asked Gina Plata-Nino, director of policy and advocacy for the Food Research and Action Center, which is a non-profit organization that says they work to improve “the nutrition, health, and well-being of people struggling against poverty-related hunger.”

She then said she wasn’t saying that they did need Coca-Cola to survive, and admitted, “I am not a nutritionist. I am a food security expert.”

She ultimately had to concede she was not a nutritional expert. Then why is she there?

Gill said a lot of our tax dollars were spent on soda, while it doesn’t actually make Americans healthy. Maybe if it isn’t spent on soda, it could be spent on actual nutritious food, which could help people’s nutrition and health?

This absolutely needs to stop. Blue state governors like Tim Walz of Minnesota and Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, and their underlings, have been refusing to fork over vital SNAP data, while thumbing their noses at federal agencies working to weed out the fraudsters from a program meant to aid the most needy Americans - those who cannot afford food.

When USDA requested this data last year, these states and several others refused to comply. Twenty-eight other jurisdictions, however, promptly provided their data. Data received from the compliant 28 states indicate there are billions of dollars per year in SNAP funds going to overpayments and fraud.

Faced with this evidence, USDA again requested SNAP applicant data from Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Minnesota in May. Yet again, these states refused to comply. The states’ ongoing noncompliance creates the likelihood of ongoing, material waste, fraud, and abuse going undetected. Such reckless disregard for Federal law and the public fisc cannot continue.

And Yet every month the Federal Government gives the States Federal funds for the SNAP Program. I bet if we quit Handing out Federal Money, they will Comply.
