Service Rifle/CMP style Shooting

Is there a basic Service Rifle/High Power/CMP style of shooting that I could look into where it’s basic Irons and not a lot of Camp Perry equipment?

I have an OK iron sight AR and decent hand loads, but I’m not wanting to dive into a bunch of shooting jackets and world class 1000 yard stuff.

It’s a ton of fun for sure. I haven’t done it in years but I used to shoot local matches with a buddy years ago. We used M1s and our NM M1a rifles, but guys would mix in with their ARs. It was informal but we did all the positions. There’s sitting, prone & off-hand, a good sling is beneficial markm. I never had a coat or glove but always did good still, they are a bonus but not required. We only shot out to 200 but used reduced-size targets to simulate 600, still a challenge keeping them all in the black. Give it a try and have fun for sure, the off-hand will kill ya, LOL Here is a little info for ya. Check local there very well could be some matches so ya can try it out.

Hey Mark,

I’d say grab your ar and show up at a local match. Bring a sling and have data on 1/2/3/600 yd. Bring 20 round mags, a glove if you have it and the folks there will likely be happy to lend a hand/gear/tips on what is really needed. You will have fun. Maybe sign up with CMP and download the rule book and get a competitor number. Its free.

Best of luck.

Mark, contact your state shooting association highpower rifle coordinator for the nearest club. My club in Texas had everything a shooter needs to get started – and we would issue it out, free, for anyone seriously interested.

When I say everything, I mean you just had to show up and Rick would assign you a rifle and magazines, ammo, coat, scope and stand, mat, glove, and data book. If you like the sport you’ll eventually buy your own stuff.

I shot iron sight M16 until the 2015 rule change allowing 4.5x scopes. A Vortex 1-4.5X with quarter-minute clicks was under $300.

Highpower rifle shooters are the nicest group I’ve ever shot with that wants you to succeed.

Thanks. I got my 300, 400, and 500 come ups yesterday with 85 gr Match Burners. I need to get 200 and 600 next outing. I definitely have the 20 round mags, but my current sling is IDF set up for “tactical” carry, not marksmanship.

I’m just running an M5 RAS and a White Oak Dissipator style 16" (rifle sight radius)

I used to go to matches, but I got turned off by the ammo cost (at least 50 rounds per serving) and, like you, the shooting jacket slinging-up crowd. It is too technical to be practical. Instead I set up game to compete against myself. Improving upon myself is what I care, not winning match or breaking record.

Yeah. It’s cool that there’s shooters that go all in and have FF match barrels and Perfectly calibrated field sights, but I’m after just what you’re talking about… practical use of a real world iron sight AR.

I really should practice the course of fire on our range to see if I like it much.

Here’s a match format they throw a few times a year in Colorado. My son (an infantryman and gun queer) would shoot these with a rack-grade M4 and a Beretta in work fatigues and his web gear (no Camp Perry equipment):
