I Bought one around Sept and while searching for optics it got me thinking. What is that rifles intended role in an actual engagement? If that isn’t the right term i apologize never been in the military and really don’t know many people who have.
Do you see someone kicking in a door and clearing a room with it or would it be providing cover fire from a safe place?
I have decided I want 2-10 variable because I know what I will be using it for but just curious it’s real role in the wild.
The 17s is a battle rifle. Think of it as a modern day FAL. Below is a good thread that tests the SCAR in a DMR type role. While it does OK, it does not excel in that particular setting in comparison to some of its peers (LaRue,KAC).
I’d say it’s pretty flexible. If you’re running a red dot, you’re setting the rifle up for closer range shooting. Is it going to be as fast as a 5.56 rifle for fast follow up shots? No, but because of the low recoil it’d be faster than other 7.62 rifles.
Put some decent magnified glass on it and you’re set for longer ranges. Is the SCAR-H ideal as a sniping rifle? No, a gas piston actuated rifle with a hard chromed bore isn’t going to be as accurate as a precision barreled bolt gun, out of the box. Because of the action, it’s very easy to get ARs to shoot little tiny groups without half trying.
In my opinion, there is more to shooting than seeing how close I can make the holes in the paper.

To me it’s a longer range gun, but I have a 1.5-8x scope on it, so it’s still useful up close.
Not as fast as a 5.56 AR or SCAR 16, but better to reach out as well as engage targets using some cover.
Run a Pro on my 16, as it’s a close range weapon, especially now that as soon as the 10.5" barrel is back it’ll be an SBR now that my Form 1 is approved.
Due to the frustration of finding a hard use variable optic with a decent reticle, I’m tempted to put an aimpoint on it and have a very light-weight and fast battle rifle TBH.
With all due respect ,where are we going to battle at ? A few months ago I fondeled a 17 and I have to say it feels nice! My son got a grin when he held it.
Uh, It’s a semi-auto in 308 thats not specialized for precision = battle rifle. To me anyway.
Do you have to be an UberL337 grandmaster ninja, doing handstand pistol shots and jumping hay bails to have something called a battle rifle now? :rolleyes:
To me, it is an “assault” rifle with improved intermediate barrier and terminal performance. Whether that is worth the ammunition cost and weight is up to the end user.

I know it’s not a variable, but you should try a 3X ACOG.
I don’t own one, but to me it would be (like my Sig 716) a 308 rifle that is more accurate than I am that I can put bullets on to targets out to 500 yds max. That 500 yds is just me cause a sniper I am not. BTW, very nice rifles there Rhino!
I agree with F2S on this. If you want a SPR/DMR style rifle, there are better options.

The SR-25 was designed for that exact job those two rifles were tested. Precision.
SCAR17 and SR-25 are not even close when it comes to price or purpose. SR-25 is a specialized precission rifle.
The SCAR was designed to be a fighting gun, that can do most things the troops needs to do on the battlefield.
So we have a general fighting gun, compared with a specialized gun, at the speciality SR25 was built for. -> Apples and oranges.
The Mk17 does pretty well in Afghanistan, in the job it was designed for. That’s what matters the most. Looks how the Mk17 is used in the theatre and you’ll find it’s role.

Again, by all reports the SR-25 is a machine. It is also expensive and not directly comparable to the SCAR-H / SCAR 17.
By all reports I’ve seen military SCAR-H and MK20s are very accurate, plenty accurate as a “battle rifle” or DMR.
Hopefully never, but that’s what the 2nd Amendment is about. The more of us that are proficient at using these types of rifles (well regulated militia), the less likely we are to ever be forced to use them. Meanwhile, they’re certainly fun to shoot.
