S&W M&P 15T with pinned stock - question.

This is my first post on the forum and I hope its in the correct spot.

I currently have a S&W M&P15T(as well as a DDM4), which I bought here in the commonwealth of Virginia last year. When I purchased this particular model, I did not need to Show a passport or 2nd form of Federal ID as I was told it is a non-assault rifle version. This version has a crowned muzzle vice a threaded muzzle (for the flash hider) and the collapsable butt stock is pinned and bolted into place. This is not a CA compliant version as the mag release has not been altered to make it a “fixed” magwell. (see photo’s below)

What I am trying to figure out is if I can swap the stock to something like the MAGPUL UBR or if by putting a collapsable stock on this version I am somehow violating a law I don’t know about.

So, if there is anyone out there that can clue me into the legality of changing my stock, I would appreciate it. If I cannot swap it out legally, I might just go with a fixed length skeletonized type.

Thanks,
DHall

[Edit:] You were asking if changing out the above items violated state law, not how it could be done, sorry

IF State law allows…

Then it should be no trouble at all having the barrel threaded to 1/2x28 (I Think is correct).
As for the stock, you may be able to punch out the roll pin and remove the hex headed nut. If that proves impossible, unstake the castle nut and remove the receiver extension completely and replace. Most Magpul stocks come with a choice of .Mil or Commercial tube (S&W uses .mil) and a replacement tube is fairly cheap.

I have pondered this myself but since I live in a restricted state my options are limited to non collapsible stocks only. My M&P15 is pinned as well. Honestly it bugs me more simply because my state is so stupid (like the sliding stock makes this gun any more lethal). Since I’m a big guy I’m gonna live with it while in New York, but the second I move, it’s coming off.

I have looked at it very intently and I have noticed that the actual buffer tube is longer then a carbine buffer tube. You can take out the buffer spring and notice that the hole isn’t milled to the actual length of the tube. If I removed or drilled out the pin, it wouldn’t matter at all as the tube is longer then the stock would be if it were collapsed. I’m willing to bet that yours is the same, so simply pulling off the stock won’t cut it. Your going to have to replace the tube itself as well.

I’m not familiar w/ the laws on such an issue, but have you guys ever considered going w/ a standard A2 stock? I mean, if my carbine stock had to be pinned, I would.

Thanks for the input. While I am not adverse to putting on a standard A2 stock, I was think I could put the magpul PRS or if I wanted to go heavier or the Ace skeletonized stock if I wanted to go lighter.

I am not a lawyer. This should automatically make anything I say regarding the law suspect. However, to the best of my knowledge, the Commonwealth won’t care if you change the stock to a normal M4 collapsible model, just like I have on both of my M4 pattern rifles.

If you’d like to go with a different collapsible/adjustable stock, that’s cool too, just stay in compliance with the federal minimum length law and you’re good to go.

oopss

I might have missed something, but the OP has his location as VA, and I didnt read anything about him wanting to shoot in MA or NH. It is fine to change it in VA, MD or any other restrictive state it will cause a problem.

No I missed something. Sorry. There is a similar post right now about someone wanting to modify a gun he bought in NH to shoot in MA, my fault. I apologize.
