I’m nearly euphoric with anticipation about finally finishing my build. For those of you who don’t know - or who even care, I’m building an Anvil Arms M4 (Massachusetts Edition). It’s shaping up to be the following:
Anvil Arms Upper (M4 barrel, M4 feed ramps, F - FSB, Troy Medieval Muzzle Brake)
Anvil Arms Lower (Forged Mil-Spec - LPK)
BCM M-16 BCG (G&R Tactical)
M4 Handguards (possibly temporary - may go 7"Troy MRF-DI)
A2 Grip (Suggestions welcome, but I have an A2 on my SOCOM-16 and like it)
Sully Stock, (no collapsable in MA, so thanks for the suggestion and the stock Thekatar).
I’d say that this will be a mid-to-lower upper tier rifle. Anvil Arms rifles are extremely well made.
Ultimately, I’ll absolutely be putting Troy BUIS on the rail and my Trijicon Tripower in LaRue 150 once I find a replacement to put on my Troy MCS/SOCOM-16. For now though, funds are tight and I’m focusing more of them on ammo and life in general. Plus, I’m a firm believer in getting to know a rifle with irons only, so I’m in no rush to electrify.
I recently won an RRA “carry handle” in a karma giveaway over at NortheastShooters. Those in the know, know that it’s anything but a carry handle, (unless you’re 7). It’s essentially an A2 rear sight attached to a picatinny rail. It seems well-made and robust - even though it’s function as a carry handle is suspect. I’ll be using it as my primary rear irons until I can afford a Troy BUIS, so I’m curious as to any downsides to this set-up. This is not my primary defensive rifle - though it will be a back-up - possible trunk gun. I’m not a range plinker either, so this will have to be a reliable and tough sight until I get the Troy, (may take a class or two with it).

No real downside, just make sure it’s secured to the flat top and periodically check to make sure it hasn’t loosened up.
I’d recommend a 50 yd IBZ when you zero.
(Actually what I think you have is an EoTech Mount sight. It has a A2 rear sight integrated on a rail section that has 6-7 slots, correct? If so, the idea is you mount a 51X/55X series Eotech on the rail and you get lower third cowitness with the A2 rear, if I’m not mistaken)
Close, but not quite - this one indeed has the A2 rear sight, but is quite a bit higher - two levels perhaps 2-inches high, with the pic rail on top - if you can picture it…My kid has my digital, or I’d take a pic of it. Looks pretty robust…
That’s it! Wow - $175.00! I had no idea they cost that much - will have to doubly thank the guy who gave it away in the karma. Just got a not from Anvil - build is coming along - any time now! Ordered my BCM from Grant today - to quote Flounder: “Oh boy is this grrreat!”
Sell it. Stick with Larue or Troy BUIS. If you put a red dot in the future, you can still use those BUIS.
With the RRA Tactical carry handle, you’re stuck with the Brownells ring (shown in that picture). Not that the Brownells ring isn’t good, it’s rock solid and inexpensive. The half height picatinny rail makes it tough to view the iron sights through the optics, it’s not in the preferred lower 1/3 area, it’s more like the lower 1/4 or less.
I got $130 for mine on EBAY. I see them sell all the time on various other sites for around $75-90 bucks. RRA also sells the CTR kit for $170 on there website, which is obviously silly. But use it like you said, nothing wrong with it, it’s just there are some many great optics mounts and buis’ now a days. I never tried an aimpoint on it though which is what it was made for.
If you find this to be the case (not saying you will), a quick option is to get a taller front sight post from BM. They’re around $5. That will tide you over until you can get another BUIS.
Thanks all - I know what I need to get - have Troy BUIS on my SOCOM-16 and will have one on my Anvil as well. If the gun is done before I can get my hands on a Troy, (may be doing another group buy at NES), then I’m at least going to give this RRA doo-dad a go, as I can’t imagine not shooting this rifle when it’s done, (that would be cruel)…
