Rounded vs. notched hammer

Is there any advantage to the non-notched hammer over the notched variety? I see that most semi hammers are coming thru notched, and have seen many with uneven wear at the top of the notch.

thanks

The notched hammer was introduced by Colt in the semi-auto version of their rifle. It is billed as a safety feature, catching on the bolt carrier to prevent out of battery or slam firing.
The no-notch hammer works well with the heavier full auto bolt carrier, it rides smoothly under the carrier. Use the no- notch with the full auto carrier=

Wear on the notched hammer is casued by it wearing against the bottom of the carrier.

I prefer the no notch hammers for builds, but am not throwing away the notched hammers.

I have a Tac-Sol 22 upper on the way. They suggest a non-notched hammer. Where can I buy one that is not DPMS?

Airdrop,

The only advantage I see would go to the full rounded style. I only say this because I use auto carriers and they just feel smoother riding over an M16 style round/full hammer. Maybe it just seems so.

For decades I have used Colt/Mil hammers, triggers, disconnectors & safety selectors appropriately modified for semi-auto only function. I feel they make better fire control components than any other manufacturer (FN would be fine too).

I still have two Colt large .170" pin size FCG lowers that have the original notched hammers in them. If I could change them to the above I might.

Mark - I found un-notched Colt Hammers (.155 pin holes) at Specialized Armament Warehouse. (www.specializedarmament.com). I posted a little about my search here: https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=34411

Good luck,

The new Stag hammers are non-notched, FWIW.

According to Dave in Stag’s CS yesterday morning, they are currently only selling notched hammers.

I did not ask for clarification if the Stag LPK bags currently for sale contained un-notched hammers or if it was just individual hammers that were available as notched only. As I mentioned in the previous thread, the Stag / CMT LPK I picked up from Grant last year had an un-notched hammer.

I’d call to confirm what you are getting before ordering online.

Cheers,

Very helpful!

As I have a Colt Semi FCG, i will pay the extra $$ and buy one of these (if they have them).

Thanks

The notched hammer actually “catches” the firing pin collar on a ramped style AR15 carrier not the carrier itself.

It’s not to prevent out of battery firing as that is completely impossible on the AR platform as it is. Nor is it designed to prevent slam firing which is also impossible on the AR platform assuming a quality gun and good ammo.

The notch is designed to be a fail safe in the event of disconnecter failure where the hammer fails to remain cocked as the bolt returns to battery.

Thank you, and good day.

Thanks for the correction, I went from memory
