Rough Draft Letter to Congress

About a month ago, I couldn’t sleep and got up at two AM and wrote this letter to send to the Congress Critters, thinking its a waste of time. Anyway, thought you guys may give me some feedback.

Dear stupidmotherfuckingpieceofhorseexcrement:

America is undoubtedly the best place in the world to live. Of course we have things like flat screen televisions, Blackberries, high-speed internet, 401ks (or at least what is left of them), and homes many of us cannot afford. None of that is what makes America great. What makes America great is our freedom. Our founding fathers set forth a set of principles that have provided the foundation for generations of Americans to thrive. Those that became before us tamed a wild continent, built a transcontinental railroad, and put a man on the moon in just a few short years with the Apollo program. Our Greatest Generation saved Europe, if not the world, from fascism. Why? Americans are an accomplished people because we are free.

Americans are free to succeed and to fail. We are free to speak our minds. We are free to defend ourselves. We have a right to practice the religion of our choosing. We have a right to assemble. We have a right to life, liberty, and property (later rewritten to the pursuit of happiness). Our rights are natural, not granted by government. Government only exists to protect our rights, not to grant them.

Nowhere in our Constitution does it suggest we have an entitlement to health care. We do have a right to health care, just as we have a right to purchase a home, a car, a computer, a 401k. We have the freedom to succeed or fail. We are not entitled to a car, home, computer, a church, or a firearm; we are not entitled to health care.

Why do politicians suggest we are entitled to health care? We are not entitled to it. Any form of entitlement program, any single-payer, or government option should be voted against promptly for our Constitution’s, for our Republic’s, for America’s sake!

An image of the president repeating the phrase, “Words! Just words?!” flashes in my head. After being critical of his opponent’s horrible idea of taxing health care benefits, he is now open to the idea himself. After vowing to end the Iraq War if elected, he sends thousands more troops overseas. After vowing not to raise taxes for families earning under $250,000 he does (Or was that 200,000? Or was that $150,000? Maybe Joe knows…). The president cannot be consistent with his words.

Americans were told we had to have an emergency “stimulus” bill passed immediately or our entire economy was destined to collapse. Our unemployment was said not to top eight percent if we passed this emergency bill which contained spending that wouldn’t reach our economy for years. This was such an emergency that you, yes you in Congress did not read the bill before you voted for it. President Obama signed it immediately after promising he’d allow all bills to sit on his desk three days for America to dissect it before it is signed into law. The bill has proven to be disastrous no matter which way the media and the Gibbs attempts to spin it.

After landing us trillions of dollars in debt with a disastrous pork bill by a Congress and President that vowed to return our nations to fiscal responsibility, you come asking the public to surrender more rights to the very same people who have run our financial system into the ground. Washington wants us to accept a single-payer, socialized, public, or supplemental health care system with none other than Washington at the helm. It’s an emergency, after all. Do you think we forgot what you did to us with the last “emergency”?

For some reason Congress and the President believes they can somehow provide health care cheaper than the private sector. The basis for this, no American will understand. Social Security is a pathetic retirement and pricier than an IRA that will put any retiree in exceptional financial shape. To accomplish this goal, you plan to provide more government intervention; ignoring that government always forces prices skyward. Control will do nothing but provide disincentive for players to enter the market, reduce quality, and reduce availability of health care. Sure, everybody may be able to afford the entitlement you wish to impose at the sacrifice of our right to health care. Ask Canadians how they like their system as they die while waiting for their entitled health care. Ask some British patients how they like waiting inside the ambulance for hours outside the emergency rooms.

Without a doubt, that doesn’t please those of you in Washington that feel you have to do something even if it’s the wrong thing. I see democrats say they have a plan, which is better than republicans with no plan at all. How dare them! Doing the wrong thing is no better than doing nothing. Democrats would rather land us a few trillion more dollars in debt to provide inadequate health care for thirty-six million people at a cost of tens of thousands per person. I urge you not to take such a path. The Greatest Generation didn’t just invade Normandy the first day of American involvement in World War II. That would have been suicide, just like the concept of socializing health care.

Maybe the problem in Washington is too many attorneys and two few people with an understanding of basic economics. Health care is a business and plays by the rules of economics. There is a supply and there is a demand. Price is set based on the market; where the supply and the demand curves intersect. If government were so concerned about the price of health care, they should look at one of two things: increasing supply of health care, or reducing demand. Reducing demand is quite difficult and counter-productive. Therefore, the only logical solution is to increase supply of health care. Why not encourage doctors, reduce tax disincentives in the industry, and reduce frivolous lawsuits? Allow the market to work and get government out of the way so that the supply of health care can grow, therefore reducing the prices.

If you Washington politicians hungry for control get your way and get the single-payer, or however it is spun this time around, you’ll get a lesson in economics. When health care is “free” to the end-user, they are encouraged to consume as much as they can. Because profits are limited, new players won’t enter the market. There will be a situation of unlimited demand with a small supply. Shortages and poor quality are sure to come. Shortages in health care means wait times. Waiting means American lives. Government take-over of yet another private industry is immoral as it takes away life, liberty, and property. Yes! It is immoral! Do not send America down this path. Do not take away our rights in favor of entitlement. You represent us.

                                                   Sincerely,

                                                    Pissedoffguywhousedtobeconsideredoneofyourbosses

Not even a junior staffer will read that. Only maybe a temp or someone who barely speaks English would take that job in Washington.

Even if your representative did read it, he/she wouldn’t care. They are far more afraid of the majority leader of their party. That’s the person that hands out committee assignments, office space, staff budgets, parking spaces, help with re-election, etc.

If it helped you get back to sleep, then that’s about the best you can expect from it.

The most you need to write or say is: I am against/for subject/bill/admendment X.

At best there’s a tick sheet and in some offices they don’t even bother with that.

Why do people think he wouldn’t “change” when he was put in?

A bit too much ranting for me but as far as constructive criticism, the third and fourth paragraphs are very redundant.

Oh, absolutely nobody would read it besides a zit-faced college kid there for credit and they probably wouldn’t READ it, rather put my name on a list to send a sympathy card to when they take away our rights in favor of entitlement.

And probably report you for spreading malicious rumors about socialized health care…

…

typo

“Those that became before us tamed a wild continent”

should be

“Those that came before us tamed a wild continent”

Send it in. But also send it to your local newspapers. Maybe as an op-ed piece of something since it is probably too long for a letter to the editor.

Good catch on the typo.

I just may take that advice and clean it up a little and send it in to the papers as an op-ed.

Thanks for the praises and criticisms.

“The president cannot be consistent with his words”.

The true mark of an accomplished politician.

Speak a great deal, but say nothing.

Make many promises, but keep none of them.

Confuse the ignorant, and placate the rest with your all encompassing wisdom.

P.S. I enjoyed the rant. By all means send it to the Washington Post and New York Times, lets see if it gets published.
