I was curious how well an ACOG with the factory mount returns to zero after being removed, so I conducted a test of my own. Some may be suprised with the results. I fired all the targets below from 100 rds with my Noveske 16" stainless rifle. I only fired 3 shot groups (gasp!) since I am testing the mounts ability to return to zero, not my shooting abilities or the accuracy of the rifle or a load. I think 3 rds gives an idea of where a rifles POI is. So here are the results.
The Acog was taken totally off the rifle and put back on. As you can see the POI did not change at all. The one group was 1/4" less than 1 3/4" to the right. All the groups are 1 3/4" to the right because I wanted to get a real quick zero and try the test out so I did not get the zero dead nuts on but the results speak for themselves. Draw your own conclusions if think the factory mount does not return to zero, just sharing some observations.
At some point I will do the same test with a Larue mount. I have no doubts the results will be similar though.
We have proven this over and over again, the TA51 will repeat zero within 1/2 MOA is properly installed. I use LaRue mounts as well but the TA51 is no slouch…

I did this test just to prove what I knew already and thought I would share it for the naysayers out there that say the factory mounts do not return to zero, break, whatever else. I have not tried it with the Larue mount yet but I bet the results are the same. I will post it when I get a chance to do it. Anyone else try this?
Actually I have done a similar test with Larue mounts and the zero returned back to the exact spot after being taken on and off 10 times with groups being shot in between. Returning to 1/2 moa is ok but not good enough when you can get a Larue that goes back to the original spot.
