Recoil?

Sadly, I am spending money having never fired (or even seen) a suppressed M4. How is recoil? I have heard silencers mitigate recoil very well. How do they compare to a good compensator? I don’t have a problem with recoil and the M4 platform, but less is always better. Just curious. Thanks!

Suppressed AR15s have more recoil than unsuppressed AR15s, all other things remaining the same.

That is true for a bolt action. The additional gas raises the cyclic rate and recoil on most semi autos, unless the gas system is designed for it.

The recoil reduction is very noticeable with a Switchblock.

In most cases, recoil is such a subjective phenomenon. I couldn’t tell you if it is more but using a suppressor does seem to change the impulse of the “felt recoil”.

However, the extra weight on the muzzle of your rifle does help dampen some of the muzzle rise. YMMV.

It’ll push you back harder… especially in supressed full auto. The cyclic rate gets silly.

As others have mentioned, recoil is increased. You are basically doubling your gas.

A can does a good job at controlling muzzle flip.

Sounds like I will get the best of both worlds with the Switchblock.

WS6, where do you live? A lot of people like myself will let you demo cans we own. Maybe I, or someone else, can hook you up.

Never buy a suppressor you can’t demo yourself against a similar can from a different make. Otherwise, how do you know you aren’t wasting your money? Since you are shooting Semi-Auto, I wouldn’t worry much about the ROF increase. Some suppressors are worse about this then others.

I live in Shreveport, LA. Sadly, Youtube video (worthless, except it did make me realize I don’t want the Blackout mounts…PING!) and 3rd party metering are the only ways I have of determining the can I want. I do not know any C3 owners here, and no dealers within several hours minimum.

It is my experience that most folks equate muzzle blast with recoil.

I have heard a lot of people talk about “lot of recoil” simply because a gun is loud. For example two identical AR rifles, one with a flash hider and one with a muzzle brake.

Most people will comment how the muzzle brake AR has “more recoil” when it in fact has less. Conversely put a suppressor on a firearm and suddenly it has “no recoil” to most shooters. This is because you have eliminated most of the muzzle blast and they are now judging it mostly on recoil alone, which was not that much all along.

Interesting that some manufacturers still advertise their suppressors as being capable of reducing recoil. I assume they’re referring to muzzle rise, not actual recoil force.

Surefire’s site quotes the following:

All SureFire Fast-Attach® sound suppressors protect shooter and team members against temporary and permanent hearing loss; preserve situational awareness and crucial communication; reduce and alter sound signature, concealing a shooter’s position; reduce or virtually eliminate muzzle flash, concealing a shooter’s position and preserving dark-adapted vision; reduce or virtually eliminate dust raised by muzzle blast, which also conceals a shooter’s position and keeps his view unobstructed; and reduce recoil, allowing bullet impact observation and faster follow-up shots.

Google To-Morrows Weapons in Pineville–I got a YHM 7.62 titanium from him and love it. Got adapters for both my AR10 and AR15’s. The 556 thru the 308 can works very well. It does increase recoil and moved my ejection from 3 oclock to about 1230 on the 16" M4 profile gun. I installed a Wolf extra power spring and H3 buffer which helped the ejection some, but can’t really tell any difference in the recoil itself.

Thanks!
