I’ll be placing my first order with RCS in the next week or two and I’m a little unsure of what cut option to chose for the purpose I need them to serve. First, I’ll be ordering two holsters for a G17, one Phantom and one Phantom LC w/TLR-1 and I want both to have the same cut. These holsters will only be used for tactical classes and at the range. They will be worn OWB at all times and I’d like to wear them at 2 or 3 o’clock right side. (I live in NJ so CCW is not and will not be a consideration.)
I don’t know if I should get the standard cut, with or without the body shield or the MD cut. I also don’t know if I should go with the standard 10 degree cant or 0 degree. For people with RCS holsters, What would you recommend for the above purposes I mentioned?
I’ll also be ordering 2, single mag pouches for the same gun. Should I get one with the MD cut and the other standard?
If they will be at 2 or 3, go with a 0 Degree cant. Canting it at that position doesnt help at all. Personally I’d go MD Cut. No body shield to interfere with the draw that way. But that’s just me. A lot of guys don’t mind the shield on their thumb. Try and test it out on other holsters prior to ordering and see if you prefer the shield. It does suck to have a cold slide up against you in the winter and if you care about your gun, it’s never nice to drench it in sweat.
As to the Mag Pouches, I see no downside to MD Cut. Especially if you’re wearing it forward of 9 o’clock. It will feel a lot better when you kneel with your left knee up, sit down or run.
Based on what you have described, I’d go with the MD cut. I have both cuts and they serve different purposes for me… If I’m doing any type of IWB carry I use a standard cut holster because, for me, it hides better. For OWB I use a MD cut holster. I think if you cruise around here you will find that there are some others who have been in the same boat as you. You’ve made a great choice choosing RCS! Top notch customer service and a great piece of kit. Now, find something to do until your holster arrives!
