Questions on Form 1

This is the world’s most over-thought and over-discussed topic.

The funny thing is that no one gives a shit about SBR engraving in the real world.

+1, Its true. Unfortunately its also mandatory.

I don’t understand the guys who can’t stand the thought of having engraving on their lower… some worried about resale, etc.

It’s a $90 to $140 dollar receiver! Who cares? It’s just the nuttiest topic ever.

Ya and spend more time trying to find a way around it than the time spent on BUILDING the fucker.

I personally dont sell my guns, and resale on my class III firearm is the last and least of my worries.

Just want to say that I have no problem engraving the lower. My question was on if I could abbreviate my name and also on manufacturer info for filling out the form. There does seem to be a difference of opinion regarding the 4h and engraving, where some leave it blank and dont engrave-and have had no problems yet, and others getting the application kicked back. I want to keep it legal, and make it as painless a process as possible. Thanks to all for the info, and also to this site as a whole for the NFA forum and all the other great info and support.

I don’t see how anyone could debate the law requiring it.
The law says you “must”, you might never get caught and who knows if they would bother prosecuting if you do but the law seems very clear.

27CFR479.102
(a) You, as a manufacturer, importer, or maker of a firearm, must legibly identify the firearm as follows:

Understood. Yeah… I was just pointing out some of the nutty stuff that surrounds the topic.

If this process were not the ATF, and were a privatized operation, you can bet your ass they’d get it clear, right, and efficient. I mean… the $200 per stamp is a cash gold mine.

The law is pretty clear - you have to engrave it. Even if you put nothing in box 4h, that doesn’t relieve you of the responsibility of engraving your name and city/state. The reason people get away with it is that one just doesn’t see BATF agents cruising the countryside looking for NFA weapons to check compliance, therefore some people do assume that because nobody ever gets pinched on the lack of engraving it must be OK to not engrave. Of course, by that reasoning you could also make the point that you don’t even have to register the weapon.

I’m much too pretty for prison and dont want to worry about ATF ninjas Tornado kicking me ( http://youtu.be/WkdzGLWIdOA )at the range. Keeping it all legal.

I agree that for the most part, the ATF field agents aren’t out randomly checking folks’ engraving. And the desk folks have said that for the most part, questions about engraving are only going to come up at transfer.

The problem is the answer sometimes depends on whom you ask. And that there is a stupid ATF letter floating around the gun forums from some bureau muckety muck who years ago wrote that no engraving was required for a Form 1. A corrective letter was later issued stating the opposite, but some times, only the first letter makes it up on the errornet.

Again, the best advice is to contact them directly, or to consult an attorney. When it comes to legal matters, getting your advice on a forum probably is the worst idea possible.

^^^Exactly.

For the sake of posterity, this attorney will provide the following legal advice:

You MUST engrave with a Form 1.

There, that wasn’t so hard folks, now was it?

I’m not an attorney. I just slept with one last night. And I spend more time in court than most litigators.

F. Lee Bailey? :fie:

I have a weakness for jowls.
