In regards to the engraving of name & city, state. The handbook says “The manufacturer’s name (or recognized abbreviation)”.
-Would my initials be a recognized abbreviation (A.B.C or A.B. Charlie), or should I just go with first and last name?
Also, “6.2.1 Description of firearm. If an existing firearm or firearm receiver is being used, the name and
location of the original manufacturer of the weapon should be entered in Block 4(a). If the applicant is
making a completely new firearm, the applicant’s name and location should be entered in Block 4(a).”
-Using a stripped Noveske receiver, I would use Noveske info?
Thanks for the help. Ive been reading through the ATF Handbook, but figured help would be quicker here than the ATF:)
I was refering to the ATF NFA Handbook. It was my understanding that I would need the lower that I want SBR’d engraved with my name, city & state (using Form 1). Is this accurate?
I now understand that the actual manufacturer info goes on the form, I guess my only question is on engraving requirements.
For your FORM 1 you will need to engrave your info as you are the actual “manufacturer” of the SBR. Now I did mine a few years ago and was able to use initials, however last I checked that has changed and they want no initials so you’ll have to spell it all out.
There is debate over this topic as some don’t feel additional is required…I interpret the rules to say it is. Best thing I can tell you is to call the ATF(304.616.4500) and ask them to clarify.
Yep, thats what I was referring to. Like Mark I have seen a few people submit their forms with that section blank and skip the engraving. Some say your info must be in the Additional Markings section and others say not…thats why I said ask ATF yourself to see what they say. They told me it must be marked/engraved and to wait till it was approved before doing so in case they did not approve of what I listed.
I just read through the “How to SBR Your Lower by Scottryan” thread. Looks like some have been approved leaving 4h blank. Engraving appears to be mandatory, so I’ll just submit the form with what I hope will pass for the engraving and see what happens.
Call them. I did this morning and they couldn’t have been more pleasant or helpful. You don’t want to engrave your lower, then be told you have to engrave something else. At least that was my thinking.
My first name is 11 characters long. I wanted to go with something shorter. No dice. Some folks going over the forms will stipulate what they want engraved if you leave 4h blank. Others won’t.
Per the handbook, the engraving must be at least 1/16th of an inch tall and at least .003 inches deep.
Im going to use my full first and last name, and abbreviate the state. Is Orion Arms still a good company to do the engraving? Thinking of on the front of the magwell, but my full name would be 13 characters (including spaces), and my city is 10 long.
Yeah they can take care of that for you. All information doesn’t have to go on one line. Theres plenty of space on the front of your magwell. They’ll even put it inside your trigger guard if you send the lower stripped.
Orion Arms is good. I’ve had all my engraving done by Ident Marking in Texas. They’re a little cheaper, do a great job, and since Orion Arms is local to me I’d also be charged sales tax.
On my Noveske lowers, I have engraved my first initial, last name, city, and abbreviated state. That’s what I put in box 4h and had no problem. I engraved in the trigger well.
Thanks for the info on Orion, guys. I would really like to engrave the trigger well area, but the lower in question has a forged trigger guard. I’ll send them an email in the next few days and discuss my options.
The “Manufacturer” made the lower, you are the “Maker” of the NFA weapon with a F1.
For a Manufacturer abbreviations other than postal require a variance, it’s a paper the ATF may approve and then keep filed so they can positively ID a firearm than needs to be traced.
If you want to roll the dice and see what your examiner will let slide put the abbreviated info in 4h. Your “Maker” markings need to match 4h so if it’s approved engrave the abbreviated info.
