Question on BUIS

I recently pick up a RRA… If i was going to spend a 1000$ trust me i would have bought a colt but i ended up traing some equipment i had for my other hobby (saltwater aquariums) to a good friend. So I ended up with a RRA with out spending much money at all. That being said i did check the bult carrier group and it was staked properly.

Back to my question it the rifle came factory with the rra flip up front sight gas block and the rear sigh is the RRA dominator eotech mount. I don’t plan on using a eotech and was wanting to get a Flip up rear BUIS. If i take of the dominator and add the Flip up rear will it mess up my sights at all? Should i just leave it? I am sorry i am new here and I did try to search my self but didn’t fine much.

Thanks

A fellow shooter at a gunclub I’m a member of has that same setup. He doesn’t use a eotech either. I believe he threw on one of the A.R.M.S rear sights and he has no problems sighting in and hitting targets. Sights like that RRA helped cowitness with the eotech. The actual height of the rear sight should be the same as a flip up mounted to the top. Why do you need a flip up if you have no optics? If your not gonna run anything but irons just shoot it the way it is. You might like what’s there. Just my thought.

Thanks for the information. I don’t have any optics other than my Irons right now. I plan on getting a red dot soon. I want to find a used aimpoint but might have to go with something like the vortex strikefire for now. I wasn’t sure if the Dominator RRA sight would be compatible with those optics? I plan on getting out and shooting this week finally getting some decent weather her in Kentucky.

Thanks
David

I believe you would need a different mount to cowitness an aim point. I belejve the vortex is magnified so you can’t really use irons with them. Funny you mentioned that vortex as that is the RDS the guy I spoke about in my first post went with. That’s why he got his flip. I’ve never has a strike fire but I hear good things about them aim points are great.

There is no need to go with a Vortex Strikefire “for now”. Just wait and save the money. Your carbine has bigger issues than sights. Use it without an optic first.

What are you suggesting about having bigger issues? I double checked the staking on the BCG and it was done properly. What else do you suggest. I know this isn’t the best AR on the market but I don’t think they are that horrible either. I am also currently building a spikes lower that I plan to make a better quality ar from.

Thanks
David

Not suggesting anything. RRA deficiencies are pretty well known. Overgassed, tight chambers, who knows what specs on their BCG’s, 4140 barrels, under buffered, etc…

That sight is fine unless you’re planning on running a scope, which you’re not. If you need the rail space on the top of the receiver, I would chop the rail portion off of the Dominator with a hacksaw and call it good.

Other things to look for on your rifle…

  • check to see if the FSB is marked with an “F”. If it is not, be careful what sights you buy, since it may not play well with that FSB. If you do get other sights, you may want to swap out the front sight post for one that is .040" taller.

  • RRA’s .223 Wylde chambers can be tight, so you may have issues with steel cased ammo. If you know any local gunsmiths who have a chamber reamer, you may want to get it reamed out to 5.56.

  • the gun is, most likely, overgassed, so you may want to look into swapping out the buffer with an H buffer, if not an H2 buffer.

  • the receiver extension is a commercial extension, not a mil-spec one. With this in mind, take this into account when you’re buying a stock for it if you decide to change out the OEM one. If you want to change out the extension for a mil-spec one, you’ll find that the current one is loctited on there and will probably require a gunsmith to remove it.

  • the feed ramps on some RRA are for rifles, not carbines, and RRA has taken a Dremel to these uppers to make ghetto feed ramps. Make sure they are thoroughly deburred so they don’t contribute to feeding issues. Also, with this in mind, it’s best to ensure that the magazines you use have anti-tilt followers in them.

  • as you shoot the rifle more and more, you will probably find that the 2-stage trigger eventually becomes more like a sloppy single stage trigger. Just something to watch for.

More than anything, just shoot it until things start to break. You may find that the rifle performs just fine for your purposes.

Thanks for the information.
I am putting a order together this week. I know for sure I am buying a alg trigger and a h or h2 buffer. I also am upgrading receiver to a milspec and adding a magpul stock ( mainly because its a kit)

Here are some picks of the feed ramp and bcg

Also where would the fsb be marked.

Thanks

Slight topic derailment. So fair warning.

What model of rifle is it exactly? I am sure someone here has to have thought of it but I’ll throw it out there, if it is one of the models I am thinking of MSRP is likely about $1500, with retail in the $1200 range if what i see local is accurate. Also personal experience with RRA rifles is that they are for the money pretty accurate, of course they also like running horse dick profile under the handguards and are heavy son of bitches. Also at least in my sample size they are not fond of Wolf or Tula and I have had to tap stuck cases out of several friend’s rifles and busted knuckles mortaling the rifles, though the 20 Varminter I have has run Steel Match fine so far. They also are considered on par, albeit falsely, with Colt by those who get their info from gun rags, and tend to be easy sells. You might consider, knowing all issues that are with these rifles, selling it off and buying a Colt, BCM, DD, LMT, though I personally lean towards the first two. If it wasn’t for the fact that I already have my BCM, and the RRA I own I picked up for a smile and a song and have more in the optic I have on it than the rifle I would have sold mine off long ago, as it sits I use it as a precision trainer until funds allow for me to build up a true one.

Just a thought, a playful thought. But something I think bares note and consideration.

Now back to your regular scheduled thread.

Sorry to get off topic and thanks for the advice.
