Did a google search not much turned up with the parameters I was using.
At first I ordered a Daniel Defense Standard M4 chromelined 1/7 twist with M4 feedramps the barrel cost $225 .From what I understand they are some of the best barrels made today.I called PK Firearms and asked what the difference was and their explanation was kind of vague.
Would someone be kind enough to explain the difference between their standard barrel and the Cold Hammer Forged barrel.
I do know the CHF barrel is supposed to be more accurate, last longer and easier to clean than a chromelined 4150 barrel.
Oh the price difference between the barrels is $ 65 Do you think I’m better off spending the extra money for the CHF barrel ?The CHF barrel is $290
Hammer forged barrels were developed by the Germans in wwII because the Mg-42 had a cyclic rate of 1200+ RPM would burn up a regular barrel in a hot minute literally.
Good article : http://technology.calumet.purdue.edu/met/higley/Precision%20Shooting%20Magazine%20-%20November-%202005%20(Vol_%2053%20-%20No_%207).htm
Thanks I read the article.
Does DD still currently produce both the standard and chf?? If you have one of each in the same configuration, how would you tell them apart?? I was under the impression they moved to 100% chf.
Neat article Thomas…my mind still can’t exactly grasp how a chf bbl actually lasts longer than a cut or button bbl, but I guess it really doesn’t matter as long as it does. This would be much more important to me over any accuracy gains…for a fighting gun anyway.
I also find it hard to believe the benchrest guys have not played or any access to chf blanks. They are an interesting crowd and probably test and try to get an advantage more than other shooting discipline…albeit a MUCH smaller group playing that game. The bbl is really followed more than any other component. Until it is proven in the arena of actual competition and post results showing a chf bbl is in the same accuracy league of the cut and button, not sure how they can claim to be just as accurate. The current extreme accuracy bbl’s in both the cut and button are so good, I think most shooters would waste time, bullets, powder and primers than chasing a dream chf bbl. Spend more time studying why the wind and mirage messed up the shot.![]()
Kinda cool shooters have all these options depending on what floats your boat.
quote: “Hence, there are about 20 hammer forging machines actively producing barrels in the USA with none in the hands of small, custom barrel makers. The machines cost over a million dollars each, so it is no wonder only the largest firearms manufacturers have them.”
what about noveske? are their n4’s newer than the article?
article greatly appreciated. excellent history and pics.
iirc noveske gets them from fn
Or Remington or Ruger. I assumed FNHUSA.
They get them from FN same barrels from centurion arms.
I have owned a couple of Steyr rifles with CHF barrels and they were very accurate
barrels …much more so than I.
You all do know that DD is a sponsor here and if you post in their forum you just might get the answer you are looking for.
