I’m thinking about making a 6ARC rifle. The closest thing to what I want would be a Giesselle GFR 20 inch, but it seem that they are out of stock everywhere- and it seems most things are- is it just that time of year. I like JP rifles, but not a fan of their rails.
Thought about putting one together.
I like that rail with the ARCA rail (Mk18? Seems an odd name) on the GFR. (Ordered a 16 inch version.
I really like JP barrels with the cooling fins with a matched bolt. 22 inches, with rifle +1. I think that would be just under the handrail.
Along with the JP barrel, I really like the JP bolt-carrier/silent-capture spring system, nice and tunable.
I’m planning on suppressing it, so I’d like an adjustable gas block for that and to tune the JP BCG system. I assume I’d go with a variable tunable one, rather than stock settings. Suggestions, or just one of the JPs?
What is a good upper for a long range rifle? Once again, I’m interested in the JP side chargers, but they are pretty expensive. I’m thinking just a forged one?
Lowers I have scattered around, and spare triggers, and I’ll figure out a stock when I get closer.
As I write this I realize that I should probably just get a JP upper and put an ARCA rail on the bottom of it.
Is it just the time of year when everything seems to be out of stock?
I’m not in a super rush. I have a class in early March, but I have other guns for that. I don’t’ want to be debugging a newish gun at a class. Plus I wonder what might be released at SHOT…
I’m interested in this. I put together a 6ARC rifle a few years ago but have yet to shoot it. I forget the parts I used. At the time (during official covid but after we smart people outside of the coasts started normal life again) I could not get any brass at all for it.
In Covid I actually got a bunch of guns built and some shot once or twice. I’ve been lurking here but have not done a lot firearms wise for a good while.
I had been giving my son since he was 12, a part for an AR every year on his birthday. When he was 18 he finally was interested and ready to build it so I helped him with that and we went to a local range a few times to test it. It also got me building a bunch of things I had parts gathered for over the last decade and a few new ideas I had (plus some handgun tinkering). So I had a spurt righ about then around 2020-2021.
We’ve been building a house (I’m my own GC kind of but I do have a home builder helping me on the back side and with subs if I need them etc). Using ICF etc. It’s been 3.5 years. I’ve done more work on it myself than planned but we’re almost done. In double the amount of time planned for. Our budget got busted by 50% and the rate change has messed things up and was one of the reasons it’s taken so long. So that has been the main project.
I do need to shoot the ARC. My problem is I don’t even know where to go around here to shoot besides a newish indoor range that opened up aboiut 5 years ago. I’ll have to catch up with some friends and see where they go. All the places I used to go have been closed and developed etc.
Speaking of 6.5 Creedmore. One of the things I gathered parts for was a couple 308 sized ARs. I built one in 308 and kind of thought that the 6.5 wold be a nice other one but have not done anything with it. The barrel is one of the main parts still missing. I was not sure whether to build a more long range 308 with it or the 6.5 My brother bought himself a Savage bolt gun in 6.5 and “improved” it some and then decided he wanted something better which he bought. I offered to buy the Savage if he could work on a long term payment plan (see above house comment) but he reminded me he owed me a bunch for AR parts I “sold” him like a decade ago when I was still active in the business. So I may just inherit it. We’ll see. That would, of course, influence the decision on the AR parts I have and whether or not to do a long range type 308 or the 6.5. The 308 I beuilt is more a base rifle/carbine type and nothing special. My first 308 sized and so just basic.
Sorry to hijack your 6mm ARC thread with a wandering “catch up” response, but I am interested in how your 6mm ARC turns out.
No problem. Any posts here nowadays are good, and glad to see my post got your response. Been too long! Fifteen or so years since the Magpul classes?
On son’s shooting, my son and I have burned through a metric ass-load of 22lr- both ‘long-range’, pistol and AR-"22"s. Got him stepped up to 6.5Creed, and we are taking a long range class this spring. He’s 19 and I think he is more interested in turning 21 to get his CCW than to legally drink…
Yeah it’s been a while since the classes. I don’t remember when.
My son is in Japan as an LDS missionary now but right before he left he got together with his friends and they all went shooting a couple times. he put together his Sig P320 right before he left. I had bought him a fire control system for a graduation gift and some parts for Christmas and he ended up buying the rest of the parts (I wasn’t going to buy all of them). Glad when they grow up right
Got my Geisille rail in. Really want the JP 6ARC barrel and bolt, but they are out of stock and there are issues with selling to CO, some tax issue or something.
I saw that. I don’t get why everything is so sold out?
JP won’t ship to CO because of tax issues.
Palmetto won’t ship to Denver and AR parts- why I have no clue.
I’m having to use Optics planet for parts??? And my last option is I found some parts on Gunbroker- ick. And $20 bucks more than it should cost.
I’m leaning towards a Proof Barrel right now, waiting to hear from JP about availability. I can find 18inch Proofs, but the only 20 I found was at Palmetto, which won’t ship to me… Not a real difference, and the 18 would probably go better with my 16.5 GEISSELE Mk18 rail and a suppressor.
And on the seventh day I rested, for the task was done…. We’ll have to see how it all comes together, but everything should be in motion
Proof 20inch 6ARC barrel (Bud’s Guns)
From Optics planet:
JP enhanced bolt, VM Bolt Carrier, and variable weight SCS kit
Aero precision adjustable gas block, which I hope fits under:
GEISSELE Mk18-16.5 forend (Europtics)
Vltor MUR 1A from Gunbroker
Muzzle device- not sure if I’m going to dabble in a suppressor or for now go with a brake.
Also need a GEISSELE wrench. The parts I got were to support both.
I think I have a lower made up that would work, or at least a spare lower and an orphaned GEISSELE trigger. Probably will look for a new stock if nothing else, Magpul PRSish…
Here’s a hint to any reader here. Start a proxy service, a type of “relay” mail, done 100% legally, but this gets around all this stupid no-ship-to BS.
RickyD, are you saying “start” as create a business or do you mean sign up for? Registered address and forwarding services already exist pretty much everywhere.
Registered Agent Services also exist which gives them the authority to sign in your name to accept deliveries and such.
Totally legit and legal (unless you are using those same services to break/bypass the law).
Trouble is that those services cost. Most folks ain’t gonna pay $50-$100/month to forward the occasional package. Makes sense for businesses in some circumstances, not so much for the average joe.
The company I work for uses them from time to time for business purposes. Most of our stuff gets opened, screened, scanned, and forwarded electronically unless it’s a physical package like for samples or deliveries. It ain’t cheap, just sayin.
I have an out-of-state cut out for shipments, but it cost me about $30,000 a year. It’s called my son away at college…. and if I send gun stuff through him, he’s more than likely to just keep it for himself…
Yes, same concept, except not a monthly fee, just a per item small fee. Example, you ship your order to 1400 Northern Ave, #1456, someCity someState. You 1st goto the fwding service site to get that number, like entering the fwding address and it gives you a unique number. When the package arrives they weigh & size it and post shipping costs for various shippers to get it back to you, then tack on the $5 handling fee, you then pay for the number, service ships it to you.
Something like that.
This really only gets around reluctant sellers. It does not get around prohibited types of shipped items.
Well, got it together. Las minute I swapped in a Aero precision ambu lower , which isn’t compatible with the VLTOR upper, so I ended up having to 3D print a new bolt catch ambi lever for the right side of the lower. Works great.
Got it out to the range and got the barrel broken in. Had a little trouble with the scope, but took about 20 rounds. Got some pretty good groups, but that was the last thing- outside of it shooting like a shotgun. JP heavy BCG and H2 SCS spring set is SWEET. I have an Aero adjustable gas block, but haven’t touched it yet- and still the gun shoots so flat. It feels like a 22. Brass ejected at the 1-2 o’clock a few feet out.
Geisselle mags were the only ones I could get to work. Elander 6ARC mags and some other 6.5 Grendel mags wouldn’t even feed. Those G mags are EXPENSIVE. Was surprised that the other ones didn’t work at all, haven’t had a chance to dig into the issue.
Glad to hear your build is going well. I’m also in the middle of one, I need to make a decision on a suppressor and mount, but I have the rest of it coming together. I’ve held off on getting the G mags because of the price, but they seem like the ones to have. It sucks because I know I’m going to end up wanting half a dozen of them eventually…
Got the gun to the range and got her broken in. The Geisselle mags are the only ones I can get to work but I haven’t worked much on the other ones I have.
