Punch Sizes?

Hey guys what size Pin Punches and Roll Pin Punches are needed for slapping an AR together?

Thanks

Alot of what is on this page is extraneous, but the roll pin punches and roll pin starters are useful.

For the roll pin punches and holders is there a specific size or is the whole pin kits recomended?

Thanks

I just bought the whole kits as I wasn’t interested in a-la-carting it to death. I’m sure I only use a couple punches out of each kit but it wasn’t all that expensive.

LOL I was trying to be a cheap ass. I was hoping that the AR only used a couple of differnt punch sizes. Do I need roll punches and regular punches or will the roll punches work for both.

I like to have both.

The other thing you’ll probably want is a nail-set type punch that has a concave tip. It’s great for breaking the FSB pins loose as a regular punch can begin to flatten regular pins and then you’ll never get them out.

Sorry I can’t be more help on the roll-pin sizes. Since I have the whole set I just root around in the drawer until I find the one I need right then.

Rob can you send a link off of Brownells or elsewhere that has the concave nail set your talking about?
Thanks for the help

I keep trying to find it on there, since I know I got it from them, but I’m having a hard time locating it. I’ll keep looking.

Taper Pin Starter

23 - TAPER PIN STARTER - This tool’s radiused face matches the end of the front sight housing taper pin to prevent damage during removal. The taper pin is removed by driving from left to right; the small end is on the left side of the barrel, the large end is on the right side! .

SPECS: 4" (10.2cm) long. 3⁄32" (2.4mm) diameter tip

It turns out that this is just a Starrett punch (good quality) with the tip hollow ground.
It does fit most taper pins very nicely, but I only find it useful when the pins are set below flush with the surface.
If the pins are properly above flush, then you can use a 1/4" flat punch to pop them loose.

As for punch sizes on the AR, all you need are 1/16" (ejectors), 5/64" (gas tube pin), special 3/32" from adco (bolt catch) and 1/8" will work fine on all the 5/32" fire control pins.

Thanks

any idea for Roll Pin Punch sizes and holders?

Thanks

The only roll pin holder that’s been necessary enough for me to make is the 5/64" for gas tube pins and the 1/16" for charging handles.
Everything else is long enough that you can start them by holding them.

If you really like holders, just get 1/16, 5/64, 3/32, 1/8 & 5/32 and you will be better prepared than me.

I use needle-nose vice-grips to compress the roll pins a bit for starting them.
